역사인물자원으로서 김만일의 생애와 헌마 업적 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 사료분석을 통해 김만일(金萬鎰, 1550~1632)의 생애와 헌마(獻馬) 업적을 종합하기 위해 연구하였다. "사료가 없으면 역사도 없다"라는 말이 있듯이 사료는 역사의 내용을 구성하는 근본이 된다. 사료가 없거나 확실하지 않으면 역사의 내용 역시 공허할 수밖에 없다. 역사 속에 등장하는 인물에 관해서도 마찬가지이다. 사료분석을 통해 한 시대를 살았던 인물에 관한 생애와 업적을 담아내는 연구는 해당 인물에 관한 역사의 내용을 구성하는 것이며, 지역문화의 원형(archetype) 자료를 마련할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의가 크다 하겠다. 즉 역사 속에 등장하는 인물은 그 지역문화자원으로서 미래가치를 창출하여 지역문화산업 발전의 기반을 조성하고, 지역경제 활성화에 기여할 수 있는 지역문화의 원형 자료라 할 수 있다. 그러므로 뛰어난 업적을 남긴 지역의 역사인물에 관한 사료를 수집·분석하고 이를 종합하여 역사인물자원으로 활용하는 노력은 그 나름의 가치가 크다고 할 수 있다. 우선, 역사 속의 인물은 사료에 바탕을 두어 종합해야 자원의 고유성과 가치를 발견할 수 있으며, 활용의 폭도 넓힐 수 있다. 이에, 이 연구에서는 해당 인물에 관한 가치 있는 사료에 우선 주목하고, 이를 체계적으로 분석하고 정리하는 데 주안점을 두었다. 특히 사료를 분석하는 데 있어서 그 사료를 기록하게 된 이유나 배경 등을 조선의 정세와 시대적 상황과 연계하여 비판적으로 검토하였다. 김만일은 역사 속에 등장하는 인물로서, 나라가 위기에 처했을 때 나라에서 필요한 전마 수천 필을 바쳐 고위 관직에까지 오른 입지전적인 인물이다. 이러한 그의 행적은 주로 『조선왕조실록』 등 관찬 사료는 물론, 이외의 사찬 사료에도 산재해 전하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 김만일에 관한 사료를 바탕으로 우선, 그의 가계(家系)에 대해 간략히 살펴보고, 그의 선대(先代)가 제주도로 내려온 배경을 고찰하였다. 그리고 김만일 가계의 제주도에서의 이동 경로와 '반득전 혈산의 유전'과 관련하여 의귀 마을에 정착하게 되는 과정을 서술하였다. 또한 김만일의 젊은 시절에 정병(正兵)과 방답진 첨절제사(防踏鎭 僉節制使)를 지냈던 기록을 검토한 후, 그의 사마목장 개척과 나라에 헌마한 과정을 『조선왕조실록』의 기록을 중심으로 검토·분석하였다. 이를 토대로 역사에 큰 족적(足跡)을 남겼음에도 일반인들에게 존재감이 희미하거나 부각되지 않은 면이 있는 김만일의 헌마 업적을 현대적 관점에서 평가하였다. 그리고 김만일 관련 요소를 역사인물자원으로 다양하게 활용하기에 앞서, 김만일 스토리텔링을 위한 분석단계에서 할 수 있는 내용을 제시하였다. 이 논문의 연구 결과 김만일은 제주사람으로서 조선 시대 나라가 위기에 처했을 때 자기가 키운 전마를 나라에 헌마함으로써 국난극복에 공헌했으며, 국방과 외교에도 기여했음을 알 수 있다. 또한 우리나라 마정사(馬政史) 및 마문화(馬文化) 발달에 기여했음은 물론, 일상생활에 이르기까지 영향을 끼쳤던 역사인물이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 김만일은 헌마의 공로로 고위 관직을 제수받았을 뿐만 아니라 조선 시대 유일한 헌마공신(獻馬功臣)이 되었고, 역대 제주인으로서 최고의 높은 벼슬에 올라 사회·경제적 지위를 성취하였다고 평가할 수 있다. 이 논문은 역사 속에 등장하는 김만일 개인에 관한 분석이지만, 조선 시대 제주와 중앙 정부와의 관계를 이해하는 데 도움이 되고, 역사인물 김만일이 지역의 역사인물자원으로 다양하게 활용되었으면 하는 바람이다.

This thesis was studied to synthesize the life and the achievement ofcontributing horses of Kim Man-il(1550~1632) through the analysis ofhirtorical materials. As the saying goes, "If there is no historical materials,there is no history," historical material is the basis for constructing thecontents of history. If there is no historical material or if it is not clear, thecontents of history will also be empty.The same is true of the characters in history. The study of the life andachievements of a person who lived in an era through analysis of historicalmaterials is significant in that it constitutes the history of the person and canprepare archetypes of local culture. In other words, a person who appears inhistory can create a future value as a local cultural resource to create afoundation for the development of the local cultural industry and contribute tothe revitalization of the local economy. Therefore, efforts to collect andanalyze historical data on local historical figures who have made outstandingachievements and to aggregate them and use them as historical resources areof great value.First of all, historical figures must be synthesized based on historicalrecords to discover the uniqueness and value of resources and to broaden thescope of their utilization. Therefore, this study focused on systematic analysisand organization of valuable historical data about the person concerned. Inparticular, the reason and background for recording the historical data werecritically reviewed in connection with the situation of Joseon and thehistorical situation.Kim Man-il is a figure in history, and he has risen to high-rankinggovernment posts with thousands of horses needed by the country in timesof crisis. His activities are mainly scattered in official documents such as theAnnals of the Joseon Dynasty, as well as other private documents.In this thesis, based on the historical materials on Kim Man-il, he brieflyexamined his family and considered the background of his descendants'descent to Jeju Island. It also describes the journey of Kim Man-il's familyto Jeju Island and the process of settling in Uigui Village in connection with'the legend of Bandeukjeon'.In addition, after reviewing Kim Man-il's records of serving asJeongbyeong(a regular soldier) and performing Cheomjeoljesa(an official) inBangdabjin, I reviewed and analyzed the process of pioneering the privateranch and dedicating horses to the country, focusing on the historical recordsof the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.Based on this, Kim Man-il's achievements of contributing horses, whichhad a dim or unremarkable presence to the general public despite the factthat he left a great trace in history, were evaluated from a modernperspective. In addition, before using various elements related to Kim Man-ilas a historical character resource, the analysis stage for Kim Man-il'sstorytelling was presented.The research in this thesis shows that Kim Man-il, a historical figure inJeju, contributed to overcoming the national crisis by offering his own horsesto the country when the country was in crisis, and also contributed tonational defense and diplomacy. He also contributed to the development of thehorse administration history and horse culture of Korea, and also influencedeveryday life.In addition, Kim Man-il was awarded a high-ranking government officialfor his contribution to dedicating horses, and became the only 'a worthyretainer of Hunma' during the Joseon Dynasty, and achieved his social andeconomic status by becoming the highest official of all time.Although this thesis is an analysis of the individual Kim Man-il appearingin history, it is hoped that it will be helpful in understanding the relationshipbetween Jeju and the central government during the Joseon Dynasty, and thatthe historical figure Kim Man-il will be used as a resource for historicalfigures in the region.
