A Study on Bata de Cola Considering the Dance Movements of Caña Flamenco
Abstract
The bata de cola, a representative stage costume of Spanish flamenco, is characterized by an unbalanced hemline, a skirt with a long back end, and a gorgeous flounce decoration. In addition, the cola of the skirt is so long and heavy that it is dragged on the floor so that the skirt cannot be easily handled even if worn by a professional flamenco artist to dance. Therefore, the skirt can be said to be a tricky costume.
It can be said that there are not many dancers who have a command of dances from other countries, such as flamenco, compared to the population of South Korea, but the cultural and artistic effects of their performances can be said to be very large. It can be said that stage costumes are very important because people take the scenes of performance as visual images and that the functionality of the performance costumes worn by the dancers is very important in order for the dancers to convey the movements to the audience well.
In Spain, flamenco has an important status to the extent that it is one of representative cultures that symbolize the identity of the country. However, the reality is that relatively few studies on flamenco costumes have been conducted in South Korea. In addition, it can be said that there have been few studies on bata de cola, which is the flamenco dance costume, per se.
The purpose of this study is to understand the concept, form, and structure of bata de cola through a consideration of it in terms of the history of costume while studying the functional elements of the costume for movement conformity when performing Caña Flamenco and solving problems occurring to improve the costume so it can fulfill its functions as a stage costume.
Therefore, flamenco artists who are active at home and abroad were invited as study participants, and the study was conducted through stepwise wearing evaluation while communicating with each other about problems that occurred. Since Caña Flamenco is a classic flamenco palo and progresses slowly and calmly, it was judged appropriate for the researcher to study the fitness of the costume to the movements by observing the actual dance movements of flamenco artists.
For the verification of hypothesis 1, the stereotyping of certain images through the Spanish social background was considered along with the process of changes in the flamenco dress from the perspective of the history of costume.
For the verification of hypothesis 2, the pattern of the costume was appropriately supplemented through the analysis of the flamenco dress purchased in Spain and commercial patterns, and the effect of the length and weight of the skirt of the bata de cola on the dance movements was examined.
As for the contents of the first hypothesis, from a viewpoint of the history of costume, bata de cola, which is the flamenco dress, was influenced by the bustle style in the 19th century and was developed morphologically as it was worn by the flamenco dancers as a stage costume in the early 20th century. The current silhouette was made considering aesthetic elements as a stage costume, and it can be seen that it has developed into a form that emphasizes the beauty of the dancer's physical silhouette. In addition, it was inferred that the unique shape of the costume became an important variable in expressing flamenco dance movements. Flamenco dance movements and bata de cola have been matched by their complementary relationship along with the development of the costume, and cola is not simply a part of clothing, but can be said to be a means of expressing Gitano's joys and sorrows through dance.
Flamenco dresses were created by women from the lower classes in Spain, and their individuality and unique flounce correspond to an ‘upward flow’ of clothing. Although it is true that the flamenco dress became famous thanks to the Seville festivals and flamenco dancers, based on the results of a historical study, women of the lower classes already wore this cloth with a special meaning in many festivals and events in Andalusia. Therefore, stereotyping it as the Flamenco dress(traje de Flamenca) or Gitana dress(traje de Gitana) seems unreasonable.
As a study process for the second hypothesis, patterns of bata de cola were derived through preliminary experiments and appropriate materials were investigated. The flamenco artists who was study participant was asked to perform cana flamenco after creating a real environment like a performance situation, and in the wearing experiment through the foregoing, the fitness of prototypes to the movements was felt multilaterally and reviewed.
Through three stepwise clothing evaluations by prototype, an optimized costume that enables the flamenco artist to implement optimal movements could be produced while solving problems.
The elements that must be considered for the fitness of bata de cola to the movements through the clothing evaluations are the flared point of the skirt considering the fitness to movements, the rigidity of the clothing, the appropriate length of the skirt, and the weight of the skirt that facilitates vuelta movement and control of the movement of cola. The concrete contents are as follows.
First, the flared point of the skirt considering the fitness to the movements of the study participant is the lines naturally descending from the buttock protrusion to the end of the hemline.
Second, the rigidity of the clothes was desperately required when the study participant was performing a rotational movement and immediately performing the next movement and was controlling the movement of the skirt.
Third, the length of the front of the skirt was shortened somewhat because the volume of the skirt was formed due to the abundant pleats inside the skirt, and the length was felt relatively short due to the movement of the skirt due to the study participant’s dance movements and the height of the heel. Therefore, the length from the anterior waist to the end of the hemline was adjusted to 108 cm. The length of the back of the skirt was appropriate if the popliteal region behind the knee of the study participant was visible because of the movement of to lift the cola skirt above the head, and the length from the posterior waist to the end of the hemline was 220cm.
Fourth, an appropriate sense of weight was required for the vuelta movement, and it could be seen that the lower part of the skirt adjacent to the hemline should be heavier along with the weight balance of the flounce inside and outside the skirt to facilitate the control of skirt movements. As a result of checking through the wearing experiment of prototype 3, the appropriate weight of clothing was about 4 kg.
In this study, the influence of the history of costumes on the bata de cola was examined, the understanding of stage costumes was improved, and while communicating with a local flamenco artist, the stage costume was verified and its fitness to the dance movements was examined through user-oriented trial products and manufactured products.
The three prototypes were produced as stage costumes with different materials, designs, weights, sewing methods, and patterns, and while conducting this study, the researcher became to obtain important guidelines for the production of stage costumes of flamenco, a cultural product of Spain, through the process of communicating with professional flamenco artists. Eventually, it was thought that the most important thing for stage costumes was that the dancers become user-centered and judge the design and functionality of the costumes. In addition, the communication between researchers and research participants to solve problems can be said to be a research attitude that is timely for the current social atmosphere and flow because it is solving problems with a convergence point of view required in the era of the 4th industrial revolution.
Based on the results of this study, the researcher will continue to study the reactions of Spanish flamenco artists by applying the research products, including bata de cola, to Spain, and will widen the subjects to consider diverse application in follow-up studies.
