현대음악에서의 민요를 기반으로 한 작곡기법 연구

Abstract

20세기 현대음악에 있어 새로운 창작의 원천으로 민요를 현대음악의 재료로 사용하는 시도를 해왔다. 그 중 특히, 미국의 민속 음악의 요소는 매우 큰 부분을 차지하며, 오늘날에도 국경과 장르를 넘어 다양한 음악에 영향을 준다. 미국 민속 음악의 요소가 어떻게 현대음악에 접목되었는지를 살펴봄으로써, 다양한 현대음악의 기법을 알아보고, 또한 민속 음악의 동시대성과 새로운 가능성을 찾아본다.

본 논문에서는 현대음악의 주류에서는 벗어나 매우 독자적인 노선을 걸은 두 작곡가, 아론 코플랜드의 《OLD AMERICAN SONGS》 중 6, 7번 곡과 루치아노 베리오의 《FOLK SONGS》 중에서 미국 민요를 개작한 1, 2번 곡을 분석 연구한다. 코플랜드와 베리오는 미국 민속음악과 재즈적 요소를 적극적으로 사용하여 현대음악의 예술성과 대중성을 동시에 이루어낸 작곡가이다. 그러나, 민속 음악을 대함에 있어 코플랜드는 ‘국가적 정체성’을 확고히 하기 위한 민족주의의 발로였다면, 베리오의 민속 음악 작업은 ‘현대음악의 정체성’을 찾아가고자 하는 예술가로서의 접근이였다.

코플랜드의 《Old American Songs》는 미국 민요 편곡 모음집으로 코플랜드가 미국의 원전 민요 선율을 바탕으로 하여 각색한 곡들로 구성되어 있다. 미국 남부 지역의 자장가인 《A little horse》와 부흥가인 《Zion’s wall》은 당김음, 교창형식, 복합리듬과 스윙 어법의 사용으로 생동감있는 리듬감이 작품 전체에 흐르고, 선법과 텐션화성, 블루 노트를 사용해 재즈적 화성을 적극적으로 사용하고 있다. 또, 오케스트라 편곡 버전은 악기의 음색을 잘 조화시킴으로써 단순한 화음으로부터 새로운 음향과 다채로운 음색을 나타낸다.

베리오의 《Folk Songs》 중에서 미국 민요를 재구성한 흑인 영가 풍 발라드 《Black is the coulor》와 부흥곡을 바탕으로한 《I wonder as I wander》은 선법, 텐션, 변박, 블루스 스케일, 블루 노트 등의 재즈 화성적 기법과 복합리듬 ,당김음, 고스트 노트와 벤딩 노트, 잇단음표를 사용해 스윙의 아티큘레이션을 세밀하게 작곡가의 의도대로 기보화하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 또, 오케스트라 편곡 버전은 원곡에 대한 베리오의 해석을 다양한 음색과 드라마틱한 다이내믹을 사용하여 잘 보여준다.

오늘날도 여전히 여러 음악의 부문에 영향력을 미치고 있는 미국의 민속 음악과 재즈의 요소를 현대음악에서 작곡 기법으로 어떻게 다루고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써, 현대음악과 대중음악의 접근성을 찾고, 동시대에 맞는 새로운 어법의 민요를 만들어 갈 수 있는다는 점에서 코플랜드와 베리오의 민요 편곡은 매우 의미있는 작업이라 생각한다.

In 20th century, the folk songs have been used as a material for 20c modern music as a source of new creation. Especially, the elements of American folk music are very large portion and even today, they affect various music beyond borders and genres. By studying how the elements of American folk music are incorporated into 20c modern music, various composition techniques of 20c modern music are examined, and the contemporaries and new possibilities of folk music are also explored. This thesis studies the songs no.6 and no.7 of Aaron Copland's “Old American Songs” and the songs no.1 and no.2 of Luciano Berio's “Folk Songs”. they all were recomposed works based on the American original folk song melody and very independent works from the mainstream of 20c mordern music. Copland and Berio are composers who have made both the artistry and popularity of 20c modern music by using American folk music and jazz elements. However, in dealing with folk music, Copland's folk music was an approach as nationalism to find ‘national identity', Berio's folk music work as an artist to find ‘identity of 20c modern music'. Copland's “Old American Songs” is a collection of American folk song arrangements based on original melody. Among them, "The little horses” and "Zion's wall” have a lively rhythm by syncopation, call and response, poly rhythm and swing rhythm, and use jazz harmony such as mode, tension voicing, and blue notes. In addition, the orchestral arrangement shows new sound and colorful tone from simple chords by well harmonizing the instruments. Berio's "Folk Songs” is an anthology of eleven folk songs from a variety of countries. Among them,“the Black is the colour” and "I wonder as I wander, that reconstructs American folk songs, use jazz harmonic techniques such as mode, tension voicing, blues scale, blue note and score the articulation of swing with syncopation, poly rhythm, irregular time, tuplet, ghost note, grace note, bending note. And the orchestral arrangement shows Berio’s interpretation of the original version with the more detailed beat notation and dramatic dynamics by using the wider range than original works. By studying how the elements of American folk music are treated as composition techniques in 20c modern music, I think that Copland and Berio's folk song arrangement is the very meaningful works. Because they make it possible to find accessibility between 20c modern music and popular music and to create new contemporary folk songs.
