A study on the development of ceramic box through reinterpretation and transformation the Technique by Bakji of Buncheongsagi : Focusing on the development of glaze using Jeju volcanic ash soil and non volcanic ash soil
Abstract
The objective of this study is to develop a ceramic box through the reinterpretation and transformation the Technique by Bakji for Buncheongsagi, to develop and apply the ceramic glaze using the soil of Jeju as a natural material to the ceramic box, and then to present the possibility of ceramic expression showing the regional character.
After initially learning about Buncheongsagi based on great interest in old tradition, the researcher got to know the inverse-Bakji technique in the middle of work utilizing the Bakji technique. As the reversed concept of Bakji technique, the inverse-Bakji technique is to scrape off not the background of pattern, but the pattern itself. The researcher thought this inverse concept could be a new starting point of ceramic art work.
As a unique ceramic style of Korea, the Buncheongsagi has seven different expression techniques based on its unique abstract image. It would be very meaningful to combine the texture and tradition of this Buncheongsagi with the modern aesthetic sense by using various materials.
Moreover, for more characteristic work, this study also conducted an experiment for the development of glaze by utilizing the soil of Jeju. The research processes are as follows.
First, this study understood and considered the background of the times, types, and characteristics of Bakji technique for Buncheongsagi and ceramic box. This study also analyzed the current work cases of using the Bakgi technique and ceramic box.
Second, by understanding not simply the transition of decoration technique, but the aesthetic value and spirit of tradition through the reinterpretation and transformation based on the case analysis on the utilization of Bakji technique and ceramic box, and also interpreting it as a new category, this study focused on the differentiation from other works. Through the change of ideation by using the inverse-Bakji technique in the process of consideration, the concept of the new expression technique was defined. Also, after defining the modern transformation of ceramic box, this study drew and presented a design suitable for the modern aesthetic sense through various expressions of Bakji technique.
Third, this study conducted an experiment for the development of glaze utilizing the non-volcanic ash soil and volcanic ash soil as the characteristic regional material of Jeju, focusing on the regionality that could be found in Buncheongsagi.
Lastly, by actually producing and applying a prototype by using the glaze utilizing the selected Jeju soil and expression technique drawn through reinterpretation, this study presented a modern ceramic box that showed the uniqueness and regionality different from others.
