A Study on the Written Records of the Story of XUFU
Abstract
서복에 대한 심도 있는 인문학적 연구를 통해서만 제대로 된 스토리텔링과 콘텐츠개발이 가능하다.| In the 21st century, three countries, China, Korea, and Japan, are actively continuing exchanges to study the Story of XUFU and share the results by holding seminars alternately. However, it is true that since the first appearance of the XUFU records in 『Shiji』《Qinshihuangbenji》, there have been few studies on how the Story of XUFU was transmitted to the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how XUFU was evaluated by era and country, how the story of XUFU was adapted to these countries, and in what form the reality of XUFU remains in these three countries.
The XUFU records of China are divided into the Han Dynasty Period, the Three Kingdoms and the Liangjin and the Southern and Northern Dynasties Period, the Suitang and Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms Period, the Songyuan Dynasties Period, and the Mingqing Dynasties Period. The XUFU records of Korea are divided into Before the Unified Silla Dynasty Period, the Goryeo Dynasty Period, and early and late Joseon Dynasty Period, and the XUFU records of Japan were divided into those before the Azuchi Momoyama period and after the Edo period.
Among the vast XUFU-related documentary records, it is the first record in Chana, Korea, and Japan, such as Simaqian's 『Shiji』, 『Usikgok』by King Nulji, and 『The Tale of Utsuho』. The records that first informed China of XUFU's settlement in Japan archipelago was 『Yichuliutie』by Yichu. And the records that attempted to connect the Story of XUFU with the Korean Penisula was「Songcongxiongshixinluo」by Gukuang, 『Karakagami』by Shigenori Fujiwara, and 『Ishounihonden』by Matsushita Kenrin. These are the records that served as a link between China, Korea, and Japan in relation to the Story of XUFU.
The time when Simaqian began to write 『Shiji』was 105 B.C. And the main character of 『Shiji』《Huainanhengshanliechuan》, Liuan, a King of Huainan, died after a failed rebellion in 122 B.C. There is a time difference of only 17 years. Considering this historical background, the XUFU records of 『Shiji』 should be regarded as true and verified historical records. On the other hand, XUFU is nothing more than a legend in Korea and Japan, where no archaeological relics related to XUFU have been found so far.
Along with the introduction of Chinese characters, the story of XUFU was naturally transmitted to the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago. Judging from the contents of 『Usikgok』, it seems that the story of XUFU had already been widely spread in the Japanese archipelago for several centuries before the legend of XUFU's settlement in Japan was known in China through 『Uichoyukcheop』. This story of XUFU was combined with the traditional Japanese Shintoism, and the deification of XUFU was made. In addition, the historical perspectives of Confucian scholars of the Joseon and Edo periods, who were obsessed with toadyism for China due to the dispatch of Joseon correspondents to Japan after the 17th century, combined with each other, giving value to quoting rather than a strict argument about the story of XUFU.
During the Joseon Dynasty, some Confucian scholars also attempted to link the Korean peninsula with the Story of XUFU. Choi Bu(「The 35th verse of Tamna poetry」), Hwang Junryang(『Geumgyejip』), Jung On(『Geumgyejip』), Ahn Jungbok(『Dongsagangmok』), 『Park Taemu(Seogyejip』) and Jo Eom (『haesailgi』) and others are among them.
Although the Korean Peninsula is a clear party to the XUFU story, it is a sad reality that research on XUFU is not as active compared to China and Japan. We should know that storytelling and content development are possible only through in-depth humanities research on XUFU.
