그림책 작가 다시마 세이조의 삶과 작품 연구

Abstract

그림책은 간결한 텍스트와 흥미로운 이미지, 규칙과 상식을 뛰어넘는 색채의 표현 기법, 우리의 상상력을 극대화하는 다양한 메시지를 담고 있다. 이처럼 그림책은 독자들에게 읽기의 즐거움과 낯선 세계로의 경험을 제공해준다. 아직 정체성이나 사회적 관계, 가치관이 형성되지 않은 어린이들에게 필요한 그림책을 만들려면 그림책 작가와 작품 연구가 활발히 이루어져야 한다. 현재까지 이루어진 그림책 연구는 그림책을 활용한 언어, 미술, 치료 등 교육적 목적으로 활용하는 사례 연구들이 대부분이며, 작가 연구나 작품 연구는 많지 않다. 따라서 본 연구에서 다룰 그림책 작가 다시마 세이조에 대한 삶과 작품 연구는 그림책 작가들에게 새로운 방향성을 제시하며, 더 좋은 그림책을 만드는 데에 큰 도움이 될 것이다. 본 연구에서는 다시마 세이조의 삶과 그림책 창작의 변천 과정 및 작품을 주제별로 분석 연구하였다. 우선 그의 삶과 변천 과정을 네 시기로 분류하였고, 시기별로 ‘그림책 작가로서 출발과 민담의 세계’, ‘자급자족하는 삶과 환경운동’, ‘환경운동과 반전운동 및 그림책’, ‘그림책과 나무 열매 미술관’으로 나누었다. 또한 세이조의 대표적인 그림책 9권을 대상으로 하여 세 가지 주제 ‘환경’, ‘반전’, ‘자연과 어린이 및 생명’으로 나눠 그가 제시하는 사회현상과 그 문제점에 대한 해답을 찾는 과정이 어떻게 독자들에게 적절하게 표현되었는지 연구하였다. 본 연구 과정에 들어가기 전, 세이조의 창작에 영향을 준 삶의 요소를 분석하는 것은 매우 중요했다. 첫째, 그의 성장배경이다. 그는 시골의 풍부한 자연 속에서 성장하였다. 그는 자연 속에 파묻혀 지낸 시절이 있었기에 모든 크고 작은 생명체에 귀를 기울이는 감수성을 지녔다고 볼 수 있다. 그의 어린 시절의 경험들은 그림책으로 만들어져서 독자들에게 자연의 소중함을 전달하고 있다. 생명과 교감하는 세이조의 그림책은 독자들에게 빛나는 자연을 선사한다. 둘째, 그가 창작하던 시기의 시대 상황이다. 세이조가 어린 시절의 불평등과 맞서 싸웠던 경험은 그의 삶의 철학과 가치관에 영향을 끼쳤고, 환경과 반전운동에 참여하게 한다. 그는 태평양 전쟁의 격변기를 지나며 엄청난 혼란과 고통을 겪었다. 이러한 경험이 반전 메시지를 전하는 ‘평화 그림책’을 펴내게 된다. 그리고 일본 내 연안 지역에 산업 폐기물을 불법 매립하는 것과 오시마섬의 한센병 요양소의 실태를 그림책으로 펴내 자신의 신념을 강력히 전하고 있다. 셋째, 그가 미술을 전공한 것이다. 그는 졸업작품으로 그림책을 펴내면서 그림책 작가의 길을 가게 된다. 그는 지금도 예술가, 환경운동가, 반전운동가로서 왕성한 활동을 하고 있다. 본 연구는 세이조의 삶과 작품 연구를 통해 그가 독자들에게 전해주고자 하는 메시지가 어떤 방법으로 표현되었는지 연구하였다. 또한 그가 그림책을 통해 전하는 자연환경, 사회현상과 평화로운 세상에 대해 해답을 제시해 가는 과정을 분석하였다.| The picture book contains concise texts, interesting images, techniques for expressing colors that exceed rules and common sense, and various messages that maximize our imagination. As such, picture books allow the readers to experience the joy of reading and a strange world not to be encountered before. Good picture books should be written for children who have not yet formed identities, social relationships, and values. Basically, this is why research on picture book writers and works should be actively conducted. Most of the research in picture books was for educational purposes such as language, art, and treatment, while only a few cases on the writers and works. Therefore, this thesis presents a new direction for picture book writers and future writers, and will eventually be of great help in writing better picture books. In this study, the life of Seizo Tashima, the transition process of picture book creation, and his works by subject were analyzed. First of all, his life and transition process were classified into four periods:‘starting as a picture book writer and the world of folktales’, ‘self-sufficient life and environmental movement and picture books’, ‘environmental movement, antiwar movement, and picture books’, and ‘picture book and tree fruit museum’. Next, into three themes: ‘environment’, ‘antiwar’, and ‘nature, children, and life’, and the process of presenting an answer to the social phenomenon and the problems were studied how it was appropriately expressed to the readers. In the process of this study, it was very important to analyze the elements of life that influenced Seizo's creation. First, the background of his childhood growth. He grew up in the rich nature of the countryside as a child. Due to such a childhood, he had the sensitivity to listen to all living things and even small creatures. His childhood experiences were written in picture books and convey the importance of nature to readers. Seizo's picture books in communion with nature present shining nature to the readers. Seizo's experience of fighting inequality in his childhood influenced his philosophy and participated in environmental and antiwar movements. He is well known as an author whose life and art coincide. Second, the context of the times when he was creating. Through the chaos of the Pacific War, the severe experience led him to the publication of the 'peace picture book' that conveys an antiwar message. On top of that, the illegal reclamation of industrial waste in Japan's coastal areas and the status of Hansen's disease sanatorium on Oshima Island were published in the picture book, expressing his belief. Third, he majored in art. His graduation work was his first picture book. He is still active as an artist, environmentalist, and antiwar activist. In this thesis, it was studied how Seizo's life and the message he wanted to convey to his readers were expressed through the study of his life and works, and analyzed the process of presenting answers to the natural environment, social phenomena, and peaceful world.
