A Study on the Positive Effect of the Preposition Image Learning on Students
Abstract
This study aims to examine what Korean high-school students know about the preposition about and to explore effective method of learning the preposition, about. To do this, this paper presents preposition learning through images. It is intended to confirm the effect through a comparative experiment between the existing learning method and the learning method using images.
The study method is as follows. A total of 60 Korean high-school students participated in the experiment. There were three groups which consisted of first-class, second-class, and third-class, and each group was again classified into a control group and an experimental group. In the first period, both groups were required to read and interpret ten sentences containing about. After that, in the case of the control group, all of the various meanings of the preposition about were verbally explained, and in the case of the experimental group, it was explained with an original image of about. Precisely a month after receiving that feedback, the two groups were required to read and interpret ten examples containing the preposition about, as in the first period. Both groups examined all expressions corresponding to the attributes of the preposition about (place, number, abstract attributes, behavior and process, adverbial use). The results of the study conducted based on this are as follows.
Education through the image of the preposition about was generally effective, although there were differences in the degree of learning. In the case of the first-class group, no significant difference was found between the control and experimental groups. They showed excellent learning results regardless of the way they were taught. The second-class group showed slightly different results. No significant differences were found between the control and experimental groups in the four attributes of about (place, number, abstract attributes, behavior, and process). However, in the case of adverbial use, the experimental group showed better learning effects than the control group. The third-class group showed completely different results. In all attributes of about, the experimental group showed a greater learning effect than the control group. Preposition learning through images positively affected students' acquisition of prepositions.
This study suggests that Korean learners' preposition learning should be done through images. When learning the preposition about, image learning of the original about is more effective than memorizing an individual meaning.
