현대채색화에서 전통적 요소의 변용에 관한 연구

Abstract

미술은 동시대를 반영하고 시대는 새로운 미술을 만들어내며 미술의 역사는 인류의 역사와 함께 흘러간다. 따라서 현시대에 나타나는 미술의 현상들은 과거의 역사와 관계되는 다양한 측면에서 연구되어야 제대로 규명될 수 있을 것이다. 2000년대를 들어오면서 젊은 채색화가들에 의해 전통적 요소를 반영한 작품이 그 어느 시기보다 많이 제작되고 있으며 이에 대한 대중들의 반응과 관심이 뜨거울 뿐 아니라 대중매체를 통하여 한국 문화가 국내외에서 소비되면서 한국의 전통문화에 대한 관심이 집중되고 있는 부분 역시 같은 현상으로 나타난다. 또한 전통적 요소의 현대적 접목이 자연스럽게 사회와 문화 전반에 나타나고 향유되고 있으며, 이러한 흐름 속에서 현대채색화에서도 전통적 요소를 차용하여 현대적 의미로 재해석하는 양상이 두드러지고 있다. 이에 한국에서 전통적 요소가 문화와 미술에서 현대적으로 결합되어 변용되고 그 의미와 해석을 통해 대중에게 소통되는 현상 중에서도 특히 현대채색화에서 전통적 요소의 변용에 대한 부분을 연구하고 그 의미를 고찰해 보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국채색화의 과거로부터 현재까지의 역사적 흐름을 살펴보았으며 그 흐름에 연결되어 나타난 현재의 양상들을 분석하여 한국채색화의 방향성을 모색하기 위한 밑거름을 얻고자 하였다. 한국채색화는 삼국시대 벽화로부터 시작하여 계승·발전을 거듭하며 독자적인 화풍으로 발전되어왔지만, 일제강점기를 거치면서 왜색에 대한 비판과 기피 현상이 있었으며 수묵화의 우세로 인해 침체기를 맞게 된다. 하지만 이러한 상황에서도 시대의 변화에 따른 실험과 발전이 이루어졌으며, 1980년대 중반 이후 전통에 대한 관심, 민중미술의 등장, 채색화에 대한 새로운 인식 등으로 다시금 활기를 띠며 현대로 이어져 왔다. 서양 미술사조의 영향과 포스트모더니즘 미술의 유입 등으로 한국화의 표현에는 장르 간의 경계가 무너지고 타 장르의 재료와 기법들이 적극 수용되었으며 더불어 국내외에서의 한국 대중문화에 대한 관심과 주목의 영향으로 전통채색화는 현대에서 다양하게 해석되고 변용되는 양상을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 양상에 대한 연구를 위해 현대채색화의 다양한 표현 속에서 전통적 요소를 통해 현대적으로 변용된 작품들을 전통적 공간구성의 변용과 전통적 소재의 변용, 전통적 기법의 변용으로 나누어 분석하였으며, 이를 통해 현대미술에서 한국채색화의 위치를 진단하고 동시대 미술로서의 가능성과 미래 지향점을 살펴보았다. 현대채색화에서 전통적 요소의 변용을 보이는 작품에서는 다시점과 여백, 역원근법 등의 공간을 구성하는 요소들이 서양의 표현기법과 혼합되어 각 요소들마다 독특한 미감으로 작용되는 것을 알 수 있으며 전통적 소재로 사용된 인물과 풍속 표현, 민화의 소재 차용에서는 전통의 내면적 가치와 정신을 계승하면서도 동시대적인 의미를 대중과 소통하는 방식으로 변용되고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 전통적 기법의 변용 양상은 다양한 재료와 실험을 통해 현대채색화의 영역을 확장시켜나가면서도 전통과 한국적 정체성에 대한 추구의 모색으로 이어져갔다. 따라서 현대채색화에서 전통적 요소의 변용 양상이 갖는 특징은 전통이 내포하는 의미를 넘어서서 현시대의 흐름에 따라 다원화된 문화의 가치 인정과 전통적 요소의 혼용을 통해 현대적 변용을 나타내고 있으며 현대 사회에 대한 문제의식을 반영하여 동시대 미술적 관점을 가지고 표현하는 현대미술의 한 영역으로서 대중과의 소통을 이루어가고 있음을 알 수 있었다.| Art reflects the contemporary, the times create new art, and the history of art flows with the history of mankind. Therefore, the phenomena of art appearing in the present age can be identified only when they are studied in various aspects related to the past history. In the 2000s, more works reflecting traditional elements are being produced by young korean color painters than ever before, and the public’s response and interest in this are increasing. At the same time, as Korean culture is consumed at home and abroad through mass media, interest in Korean traditional culture is also focused. In addition, modern grafting of traditional elements naturally appears and is enjoyed throughout society and culture. In this trend, modern color painting also borrows traditional elements and reinterprets them in a modern sense. Therefore, among the phenomena in which traditional elements are modernly combined and transformed in culture and communicated to the public through art, in particular we studied the transformation of traditional elements in modern color painting and examined the meaning of traditional elements. To this end, we first looked at the historical flow of Korean color painting from the past to the present, and tried to obtain a foundation for exploring the direction of Korean color painting by analyzing the current aspects connected to the flow. Korean color painting has developed into an independent style starting with murals from the Three Kingdoms Period and continuing to inherit and develop, but through Japanese colonial era, it faced a downturn due to criticism of Japanese color, avoidance, and the dominance of ink and ink paintings. However, even in this situation, experiments and developments were carried out according to the changes of the times, and since the mid-1980s, interest in tradition, the emergence of Minjung art, and a new awareness of color painting have revitalized and continued into the modern age. Due to the influence of Western art trends and the influx of postmodern art, the boundaries between genres have been broken down in the expression of Korean painting, and materials and techniques of other genres have been actively accepted. In addition, due to the influence of interest and attention on Korean popular culture, traditional color paintings are interpreted and transformed in various ways in modern times. For the study of this aspect, the works that modernly transformed the traditional elements of modern color painting were analyzed by dividing them into transformation of traditional space composition, transformation of traditional material, and transformation of traditional technique. Through this, the position of Korean color painting in contemporary art was diagnosed, and the possibility and future direction as contemporary art were examined. In modern color painting, which shows the transformation of traditional elements in modern color painting, elements constituting space such as multi-viewpoint, blank space, and reverse perspective are mixed with Western expression techniques, and each element acts as a unique aesthetic sense. By borrowing traditional figures, expressions of customs, and materials from folk paintings, Korean color painting inherits the internal values and spirit of tradition while communicating contemporary meaning with the public. In addition, the aspect of transformation of traditional techniques led to the pursuit of tradition and Korean identity while expanding the realm of modern color painting through various materials and experiments. Therefore, the characteristics of the transformation of traditional elements in modern color painting go beyond the meaning of tradition, recognize the value of diversified culture according to the current trend, and express modern transformation through the mixed use of traditional elements, and have a critical mind about modern society. Trough this, it was found that modern color painting, which transformed traditional elements, is communicating with the public as a realm of contemporary art that stands for contemporary art.
