회화작품에 내포된 상징과 표현연구

Abstract

회화의 흥미로운 점 중 하나는 같은 작품이라도 다양한 해석을 통해 작품의 의미와 가치가 새롭게 부여된다는 점이다. 회화는 작품을 제작하는 각 개인의 경험과 생각을 기반으로 하여 어떠한 관념을 표현하는 하나의 방법이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 표현방식들은 감상자들에게 다양한 해석의 여지를 남기고, 표현된 대상의 본연의 기능과는 별개로 새로운 가치가 주어지기도 한다. 이렇게 새로운 해석과 가치를 만들고, 서로 다른 생각과 감정을 느끼게 만드는 요소는 ‘상징’이다. 이러한 점에서 상징이란 회화에 있어서 흥미로운 지점이 있다. 본 연구자는 이러한 상징의 특성을 작품에 적용시킬 필요를 느꼈고, 본 연구자의 작업에 표현된 상징적 요소에 대하여 알아보고자 본 연구를 진행하였다. 그 과정 및 결론으로 첫째, 회화에서 상징과 상징주의의 특성을 정리하였다. 일반적으로 상징이란 ‘추상적인 개념이나 인식을 구체적인 사물로 나타냄’이란 뜻으로, 회화에서도 감정이나 관념 같은 비가시적 개념을 표현하고자 할 때 구체적인 소재에 상징을 부여하곤 한다. 회화에서 의도적으로 상징을 사용하기 시작했던 미술사조는 상징주의라고 할 수 있다. 상징주의 작가들은 인간의 감정, 욕망, 감각과 꿈 등의 비가시적 영역의 가시적 표현을 시도하며 인간의 정신세계를 시각화하려는 시도를 하였다. 이러한 시도들이 회화의 한계를 극복해 주었고, 작가에게 주체적인 힘을 부여해주며, 다음 세대 예술가들에게 큰 영향을 주었음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 본 연구자의 작품에 내포된 상징들과 연관된 선행 작가들을 연구하였다. 마르셀 뒤샹은 이전 예술의 흐름에서 벗어난 혁신적인 작품을 선보이는데, 그의 레디메이드는 작가가 오브제를 선택함으로써 생기는 새로운 가치와 상징을 보여준다. 이는 오브제뿐만 아니라, 회화에서 소재의 선택에서도 적용될 수 있으며, 현시대 미술의 모든 작품이 선택의 개념이 적용되는 만큼 중요한 부분임을 일깨워준다. 또한 아냐 갈라치오와 샘 테일러 우드의 작품에서 볼 수 있는 시간의 흐름은, 비가시적 관념을 상징적으로 제시하며, 간접적으로 시간의 흐름을 느끼게 하는 하나의 방법을 보여준다. 그들은 주로 소재가 소멸하는 과정을 설치나 영상 작업으로 제시하는데, 회화에 적용시키자면, 소멸된 결과를 제시하여 과정을 유추하게 만드는 방식 등으로 차용할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 한편 데미안 허스트의 작품은 전반적으로 죽음과 영원의 상징들을 내포시키는데, 이렇게 의미가 상반된 상징을 동시에 제시하는 방식은 작품이 단순하게 해석되지 않고, 아이러니함과 딜레마를 안겨준다는 점을 보여준다. 이러한 선행 작가들의 상징적 표현방식들은 본 연구자의 작업에도 깊이 관여하며, 이론적 토대를 제시해 주었고, 작업의 다양한 방향성을 제시해 주었다. 셋째, 본 연구자의 작품을 분석하였다. 본 연구자가 개인적으로 부여한 상징들은 작업에 보다 풍부하고 새로운 의미들을 내포시켜 준다. 낡은 이동수단과 함께 연출한 물, 빛, 페인트, 자연, 동물 등을 제시하여 ‘유한함’, ‘불가항력’, ‘불가항력에 대한 저항’과 같은 개인적 상징을 부여하였는데, 본 연구자의 의지와 별개로 현재의 시대적 상황에 의해 만들어지는 새로운 상징과 의미가 생김을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 회화에서의 상징은 작품을 완성시키는 요소가 아닌, 함축적 의미로 다양한 해석의 길을 열어주는 장치로써, 작품의 가치를 성장시키는 요소임을 확인하였다. 이러한 상징의 특징을 이해하고, 의식적으로 사용하는 시도들은 작업의 표면적 이미지 이상의 가치를 내포시켜주고, 작품이 성장하는 방향으로 안내하는 하나의 지침이 될 것이다.|One of the most interesting facts about painting is that a painting can have whole new meanings and values through different interpretations. Although based on the experience and the thought of the artist to show a certain idea, painting leaves a space for the viewers to think and interpret, and new concepts and values are made separated from the original idea of the expressed subject. Symbols play an important role in generating new values and emotions in this process. I, as an artist, felt the need to apply the characteristics of symbols in my painting and proceeded to do research the symbolic elements in painting in art history. I researched the symbols in painting and the characteristics of Symbolism as part of the thesis and to conclude. Symbols signify abstract ideas and knowledge in specific forms in general, such as emotions, in other words, invisible notions can be realized in specific objects with symbols. Symbolism is the artistic movement in history that intentionally used symbols in painting, and the artists associated with Symbolism tried to visualize the invisible aspects of human emotions, desires and dreams in a way to visualize the spiritual world of human beings. These attempts helped for the artists go beyond the limitations of painting giving them an autonomous power to paint, and affecting the artists in the next generation. Second, I researched the artists who are associated to Symbolism concerning the symbols in my painting. Marcel Duchamp created progressive works that broke away from the then-main artistic stream. To take the Ready-made as an example, it created new value and symbols through the act of choosing an already existing object in the market. This not only applies to the sculptural aspect of art but also the subject in painting, and it is important that choosing what to paint and make applies to all art-making process of modern art. Furthermore, the flow of time in the works of Anya Gallaccio and that of Sam Taylor-Wood symbolizes the invisible notions of time and lets us feel the time indirectly. These two artists worked on installations and film-based media to show the process of dying out of what they chose as a subject. To apply this to painting, I can infer the process by suggesting the result of a destroyed subject. On the other hand, the works by Damien Hurst generally contain the symbols of death and eternity, and the way he suggests the two contrary symbols simultaneously gives a sense of irony and dilemma, rather than interpreting the work as it is. The symbolic expressions of the researched artists allowed me a deeper understanding of my works with the theoretical foundation and diverse directions I could pursue in my painting. Third, I analyzed my work based on the previous research. The symbols I used for my painting have rich and new meanings. The worn transportations with artificial lights, water, paint, nature, and animals imply the ideas of ‘finiteness’, ‘irresistible force’, and ‘resistance to the irresistible force’, and separated from my will, new meanings and symbols are being made by the circumstances of the times in modern society. Through the thesis, I found out that the symbols in paintings are not the element for completion; they are a device open to diverse interpretations of the works, thus enhancing the value of the painting. The effort to understand and attempt to use these symbols will involve more meanings beyond the image on the surface and serve as a guideline for future paintings.
