관광영어 활용 수업을 통한 의사소통능력 신장 방안

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 관광영어 활용 수업을 통한 중학생들의 영어 의사소통능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 효율적인 방안을 연구하는 데 있다. 본 연구의 대상은 서귀포시내 00중학생 2학년 2개 학급 70명을 대상으로 1개 학급(35명)은 관광영어 활용 수업을 하는 실험집단, 다른 1개 학급(35명)은 비교집단으로 선정하여 2007년 3월부터 12월까지 10개월간 실시하였다. 실험집단은 연구자가 학생들의 성적을 분석하여 의도적으로 관광영어 활용 수업 요목을 구성하여 수업자료를 만들어 수업을 전개함은 물론 영어 체험활동 기회를 확대·제공하였고, 비교집단은 관광영어 활용 수업 및 활동을 하지 않았다. 관광영어 활용 수업을 함으로써 첫째, 학생들의 영어 흥미, 영어 기능 영역에서 관심도의 변화가 있을 것이고, 둘째, 듣기 능력과 말하기 능력의 차이가 있을 것이고, 셋째, 전반적인 영어 학력 향상의 차이가 있을 것이고, 넷째, 관광영어 체험활동으로 우리 문화 및 관광지에 대해 외국인과 의사소통 할 수 있을 것이다. 라는 가설을 설정하고 연구를 실시하였다. 실험이 끝난 후 설문조사와 인터뷰를 통하여 영어 학습에 대한 태도 변화를 알아보고, 듣기능력 평가와 말하기 평가, 학업 성취도 평가 결과를 비교 분석하여 결과를 검증해 보았다. 실험집단이 비교집단보다 영어 학습에 대한 흥미도와 참여도가 크게 향상되었음을 알 수 있었다. 영어의 네 기능에 대한 관심도 조사에서는 듣기와 말하기에 대한 관심이 높아 성적이 향상되었으며, 전반적인 영어 학력면도 실험 전에 거의 차이가 없었던 두 집단이 실험 후의 평가에서는 실험집단이 비교집단 보다 향상되었음이 드러났다. 또한, 학생 자가 측정 의사소통능력 변화와 원어민과의 대화 의욕 면에서도 실험집단은 실험 전 보다 실험 후가 크게 발전된 모습으로 변화하였다. 결과적으로, 관광영어 활용 수업이 학생들의 적극적인 참여와 흥미를 이끌어 영어 의사소통능력에 상당히 효과가 있었으며, 학생들의 자아 정체감이 생기고 외국 문화에 대한 이해의 폭도 넓어지는 부수적인 효과도 나타났다. 앞으로의 관광영어 활용 수업 전략은 학생들의 활동을 자극하고 수업 활동에 역동성을 부여하여 효율적인 의사소통신장 방안이 되리라 판단된다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how to improve English communicative competence of the middle school students based on activities using Jeju Tourism English. The subjects in this study were 70 second grade students who were enrolled at a middle school in Seogwipo City, Jeju Island. The 70 students were divided into 2 groups of 35 students each. One group was labeled as the experimental group, the other as the uncontrolled group. The following 4 hypotheses were set forth: 1. Using tourism English materials will be useful in increasing students' interest and involvement in English. 2. Using tourism English materials will be useful in improving students' listening and speaking abilities in English. 3. Using tourism English materials will be useful in developing students' general scholastic accomplishment in English. 4. Using tourism English materials will help students to share their culture and knowledge of tourist attractions if/when they meet English-speaking tourists on Jeju Island. The effects of using tourism English materials in class were examined in five areas (note that in all areas listed below, judgments were made using the experimental situation as a standard of reference). The five areas were as follows: interest in English and degree of participation, listening and speaking abilities, general English achievement, student self-assessment of communicative competence, and a comparison of students' level of scholastic competency before and after the experiment. The results of the abovementioned experiment indicate that using tourism English materials in class is effective in improving students' communicative competence. It should also be noted that using Jeju Tourism English-based activities in class made students identify more with their native culture and also helped students to gain greater communicative confidence in English. Therefore, we suggest that creating a lesson plan using Jeju Tourism English will make students cultivate a positive attitude toward learning English and will enable them to communicate in English more fluently and confidently at the middle school level.
