『느릅나무 밑의 욕망』과 『밤으로의 긴 여로』에 나타난 소외와 극복의 문제

Abstract

유진 오닐(Eugene O'Neill)은 현대인이 처한 정신적 곤경을 다루었던 극작가다. 그는 인간의 내면세계를 탐구하기 위해 여러 형태의 극들을 발표하였고, 다양한 극적 기법을 실험하였다. 그의 극에 일관되게 나타나는 주제는 소외인데, 신, 자연, 사회, 국가, 가족과의 유대감 상실이나 자아 상실로 인한 소외가 나타난다. 본 논문은 오닐의 두 작품, 『느릅나무 밑의 욕망』(Desire Under the Elms)과 『밤으로의 긴 여로』(Long Day's Journey into Night)에 나타난 소외의 양상과 극복과정을 살펴보는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 『느릅나무 밑의 욕망』과 『밤으로의 긴 여로』에는 존재는 하지만 그 기능을 상실한 가정의 모습이 나타난다. 두 작품 속 인물들은 가정에조차 소속감을 느끼지 못하고 가족 구성원으로서의 책임과 역할을 다하지 못한다. 『느릅나무 밑의 욕망』은 농장을 둘러싼 인간의 욕망과 소외를 다루고 있다. 아버지 이프레임(Ephraim Cabot)은 강한 소유욕과 엄격한 신(hard God) 때문에 가족과 이웃사람들로부터 소외된다. 이프레임의 세 번째 부인 애비(Abbie)는 소유욕과 고독한 삶으로 인해 소외된 삶을 살며, 아내와 어머니로서의 책임감과 정체성을 상실한다. 이프레임의 아들 에벤(Eben)은 어머니의 영혼에 사로잡혀 정체성을 확립하지 못하므로 그의 삶을 결정하는 기준은 그 자신이 아니라 바로 죽은 어머니다. 소외를 극복하지 못하는 이프레임과 대조적으로, 애비와 에벤은 서로에 대한 진실한 사랑을 통해 소외를 극복한다. 『밤으로의 긴 여로』는 서문에서 오닐이 직접 밝히고 있듯이 피와 눈물로 쓴 그의 가정사다. 아버지 제임스(James Tyrone)는 땅을 사들이는 것을 제외하고는 돈을 쓰는 데 인색하며, 물욕에 사로잡혀 배우로서의 정체성을 상실한 인물이다. 어머니 메리(Mary)는 마약을 수단으로 현실에서 벗어나 과거 속으로 도피함으로써 자기정체성을 상실하며, 아내와 어머니로서의 책임을 다하지 못한 죄책감에 사로잡혀 있다. 큰 아들 제이미(Jamie)는 어머니에 대한 보상 심리로 방탕한 생활을 한다. 작은 아들 에드먼드(Edmund)는 자신의 출생 때문에 어머니가 마약에 중독되기 때문에 어느 곳에도 소속감을 느끼지 못한다. 소외를 극복하지 못하는 메리와 대조적으로, 타이론(Tyrone) 가의 남자들은 자기고백을 통하여 그동안 인정하지 않던 자신들의 모습을 직면하고 서로를 이해하고 용서하는 계기를 갖게 됨으로써 소외 극복의 기회를 갖는다. 결론적으로 오닐은 『느릅나무 밑의 욕망』과 『밤으로의 긴 여로』를 통하여 오늘을 살아가는 현대인들이 소외를 어떻게 극복해야하는지에 대한 실마리를 제공하고 있다. 즉, 그는 진정한 의사소통, 사랑과 용서, 이해를 통해서만이 서로에게 소속감을 느낄 수 있고 소외를 극복할 수 있다는 메시지를 제시하고 있다.

Eugene O'Neill is a playwright who tried to explore the mental hardship faced by modern people. Trying to look into the inner world of humans, he published plays of diverse forms and experimented with various dramatic techniques. Consistent throughout his plays is the subject of alienation, which is attributed to loss of a bond with God, nature, society, nation, and family, or loss of self. The purpose of this study is to examine the patterns of alienation and the process of overcoming it in his two works, Desire Under the Elms and Long Day's Journey into Night. In these two works, O'Neill shows families that exist but no longer function as a family. The characters don't have any sense of belonging even to their families. They fail to fulfill their responsibilities and roles as family members. In Desire Under the Elms, O'Neill describes human desire and alienation among the family members. The father, Ephraim Cabot, is alienated from his own family and neighbors because of his enormous greed for possession and his belief in a "hard God". His third wife, Abbie leads an alienated life because of her desire for possession and her loneliness. She has completely lost her sense of responsibility and identity as a wife and mother. Ephraim's son, Eben is too involved in his mother's spirit to establish his own identity. His life is decided not by him but by his deceased mother. Ephraim can't overcome alienation, but Abbie and Eben get over alienation through true love for each other. Long Day's Journey into Night is a family history written in O'Neill's own tears and blood. The father, James Tyrone, is very stingy with money except when he purchases land. Being blinded by his greed for material things, he has lost his identity as an actor. His wife, Mary resorts to drugs to escape from reality into the past. As a result, she has lost her ego. She has the sense of guilt because she doesn't fulfill her duties as a wife or as a mother. Their elder son, Jamie compensates himself for the lack of his mother's love by leading a dissipated life. As a result, he ruins his life. His younger brother, Edmund has no sense of belonging, believing that his unwanted birth drove his mother to drug addiction. By confessing their secrets to one another, the Tyrone men have the opportunity to understand and forgive one another, so they ultimately get over their alienation. These two works provide clues about how modern people can overcome alienation. Only through true communication, love, forgiveness, and understanding can they have a sense of belonging with one another.
