예이츠의 시에 나타난 이원론과 통일적 존재

Abstract

윌리엄 버틀러 예이츠는 그의 작품을 통하여 이질적이고 상반되는 세계, 즉 현실과 이상, 이성과 감성, 육체와 영혼, 지성과 오성 등의 삶의 이원적 대립 세계를 통합하고 융화시켜, 조화롭고 일원화된 통일세계를 구현하는데 노력한 시인이다. 또한 그는 이들 대립요소들 사이의 투쟁과 갈등을 통하여 소위 그가 말하는 존재의 통일 상태인 완전한 상태에 이를 수 있다고 생각하였다. 예이츠는 자신의 체험에 바탕을 두고 시 세계를 건설해 나간 시인이었으며, 또한 그의 시들은 평생에 걸쳐 나타나고 있어서 매우 방대하고 폭이 넓다. 초기시에서 그는 현실과 이상세계 사이에서 방황하였고 요정과 신화의 세계인 이상향을 찾아 그것을 자신의 시 속에 구축하려 한다. 그러나 그는 아일랜드의 정치적 상황 및 모드 곤과의 관계에서 실망과 좌절을 겪게 된다. 이러한 개인적 경험을 통해 그는 그의 이상세계와 현실세계 사이에서 불일치와 갈등을 발견한다. 예이츠가 이상세계를 찾고자 하는 현실세계의 탈출시도는 이상향을 찾는데서 끝나지 않는다. 유한한 목숨과 육체의 노쇠현상에 대한 자각은 예이츠로 하여금 물질적이며 관능적인 유한세계인 현실을 떠나, 영원한 영혼의 이상세계이며 늙은이의 나라인 성도 비잔티움으로 항해하게 한다. 그러나 불멸의 예술품으로 재생하고자 하는 예이츠였지만, 그가 추구하는 이상세계에서의 완전한 존재인 존재의 통일이야말로 영과 육의 조화로운 결합이 없이는 성취할 수 없음을 깨닫게 된다. 마침내 예이츠는 완전한 한 인간의 삶을 위해서는 영과 육 모두가 불가결한 요소임을 인정하게 된다. 나아가서는 그가 꿈꾸는 이상세계라는 것이 현실에 있어야할 육체에 긷든 인간의 정신에서 창출된 것이므로, 그 이상세계는 다름 아닌 현실세계에 자리잡아야 한다는 결론을 얻는다. 즉 예이츠가 추구하는 완전한 삶의 상태인 존재의 통일은 영육의 결합에서 비롯되며, 이것의 바탕은 현실세계에 내려와 세워진 이상세계임을 알 수 있다. 결국 예이츠는 견뎌내기 힘든 번뇌와 고통을 감수하고 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 관능의 바다를 여행한 끝에 삶의 의미와 실체를 깨달았으며, 이로써 영과 육 나아가 현실과 이상의 결합 위에 존재의 통일을 찾아낸다.

The poet, William Butler Yeats attempted to embody a harmonious, unitary and unified world through trying to meld an extraneous and opposing world. These opposites include actuality and vision, reason and sense, body and soul, and intelligence and wisdom. Yeats thought he could reach a perfect state, "Unity of Being," through struggle and discord between these conflicting factors. Yeats who constructed his poetic world from his own experiences. His poetry depicted his whole life, resulting in a vast and dynamic collection. In his early poetry, Yeats' mind wandered between the real and ideal worlds, in search of a fairy land in a supernatural world. He was later confronted with the harsh reality of life in Ireland through his relations with Maud Gonne, and the political situation in the country in general. Through his many personal experiences, he found discord and conflict between his ideal world and the real world. His efforts to escape the real world didn't result in discovery of the ideal world. Awareness of a limited life and an old body helped him adjust to the real world, which was material and sensual. He chose to navigate to Holy Byzantium, the eternal, ideal world of the soul and the old man's country. He wanted to resuscitate himself as an immortal art, but he realized it was too hard to achieve Unity of Being-to become a perfect being in pursuit of his ideal world- without harmonious conjunction between body and soul. At last, Yeats recognized the essential factors, both body and soul, for a life of perfection. Furthermore, confined the ideal world, as Yeats dreamt about his spirit emerged from the human limitations of the body confined in the real world. He reached the conclusion that the ideal world must be a part of the real world. Unity of Being, the ideal world and the perfect state of life Yeats pursued, originated from conjunction with body and soul. We know that the disposition of this ideal world depends on our interpretation of reality.. Yeats found the significance and substance of life after years off voyaging the sensual sea. Moreover, he looked upon the Unity of Being as standing in conjunction with reality and vision, body and soul.
