A Study on Jeju Residents' Perceived Impacts and Attitudes toward Medical Tourism.
Abstract
Medical Tourism is emerging as a new trend in the tourism industry. It is a high value-added business which creates new jobs and increases revenue. Therefore, there has been considerable growth of interest in the field from all range of people. Recently, medical tourism is being developed in many countries, and Jeju is no exception.
The purpose of this study is to examine the resident's perception and attitude to medical tourism in Jeju area. This study attempted to investigate whether there are significant correlationships between resident's perception and attitude on medical tourism. Also, the study attempted to examine whether there are significant differences in resident's attitude according to the fields of work(a related tourist businesses, a related medical businesses, both related, non-related).
To accomplish the objectives of this study, the literature review was performed and based on the theoretical review, research model and hypotheses were established.
For empirical study, questionnaire survey was conducted to residents in Jeju from October 1 to October 15, 2008. Total 400 questionnaires were distributed to local residents and 373 questionnaires were collected. Finally, 349 questionnaires were used for the analysis. As for the analysis methods of this study, frequency analysis, factor analysis, T-test, ANOVA analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed for the statistic analysis using SPSS 12.0 for Window.
The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows:
1) There were significant differences in the resident's perception of medical tourism and attitude according to the individual characteristics(gender, education, a related businesses, native place, a living period).
2) The study showed that resident's perception of medical tourism had impacts on the resident's attitude. In other words, positive perception had the positive effect on the resident's attitude while negative perception had the negative effect on the resident's attitude.
3) Resident's perception of medical tourism had influences on the resident's attitude according to the fields of work(a related tourist businesses, a related medical businesses, both related, non-related). It has been confirmed that the group of a related businesses(tourist businesses and medical businesses) had more positive effect on the perception and the attitude than non-related businesses. In other words, it was revealed that the more related they were, the more positive perception and attitude they had.
As to the limitation of this study, the research area of medical tourism needs more academic and empirical study. Also, in the future study, there are need to be examined the resident's perception and attitude to medical tourism after developing medical tourism.
