Research on the Influence of Small Business Owner's Social Competences over Business Performance
Abstract
Small businesses are business organizations relatively small in scale, which is very appropriate for business environment with radical changes through measures that are efficient and flexible to such environmental changes; however, there exists difficulty in capital financing, inferiority in securing human resources, lack of information, lack of management and technical skills, etc.
Such circumstances require small business owners to equip themselves with not only management skills but also social competences that enable decision-making through communication with others, that is, social perception skill, social adaptation skill, and communication skill, for successful management of small businesses.
Therefore, this research, based on existing literature and researches, assumed that small business owner's social competences play an important role, and tried to find out whether the social competences incur indirect rather than direct influence on business performance through auxiliary factors like innovativeness and business management competency.
For this purpose, empirical research was performed on small business owners of 141 businesses in manufacturing industry, information technology service industry, construction industry, etc. located in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.
The summary of the empirical research can be summarized as follows.
First, the result showed that when only the social competences factor is considered, only the social adaptation skill and communication skill of the business owner had significant influence on business performance.
Second, the result showed that among social competences, the factors with significant influence on innovativeness were social adaptation skill and communication skill.
Third, business management competency were divided into relationship competency and management competency to find out the relationship among the social competences, and the result showed that social perception skill and adaptation skill had significant influence on relationship competency, and social adaptation skill and communication skill on management competency.
Fourth, multiple regression analysis performed with the social competences factors, innovativeness, relationship competency and management competency simultaneously as variables showed that innovativeness and management competency had significant influence on business performance, and only communication skill among the social competences.
In conclusion, the result suggests that small business owner's social competences are factors that indirectly influence business performance through improving innovativeness and business management competency, rather than having direct influence on business performance. However, it also suggests that communication skill has both direct and indirect influence on business performance.
