프로스트 시에 나타난 갈등의 양상과 극복

Abstract

로버트 프로스트(Robert Frost, 1874-1963)는 뉴잉글랜드의 아름다운 자연을 배경으로 그 속에 살아가는 사람들의 모습에 관한 많은 시를 썼다. 로버트 프로스트의 시에서 자연은 그 자체로의 대상이 아닌 인간에게 영향을 미친다. 이러한 영향은 인간의 삶의 영역에서 밀접한 관계를 이루고 현대 사회 질서와 개인의 삶에 혼란을 야기 시켜 여러 가지 형태의 갈등을 일으킨다. 따라서 프로스트는 그의 시에서 사물이나 풍경, 인간 사이에 일어나는 사건에 대한 인간의 갈등을 통해 인간 본질의 이상향을 찾고 인간의 갈등 양상의 요소를 해결하고자 한다. 프로스트의 시에 나타난 인간 갈등의 양상을 세 가지로 나누어 자연과 인간, 인간과 인간 사이 그리고 일상과 일탈 사이의 갈등으로 살펴볼 수 있다. 프로스트는 자연과 인간의 갈등을 보여주는 시에서 자연을 어둡고 파괴적인 모습으로 공포와 절망감을 주고 인간 존재를 위협하는 부정적인 자연의 모습으로 그려낸다. 그는 궁극적인 실재를 찾고자 자연에 맞서는 인간에게는 한계가 있다는 것을 인정한다. 프로스트는 자연이 인간에게 냉담하며 심지어는 해를 가하기도 한다고 생각하며 그러한 악의적인 자연 앞에서 인간이 어떻게 느끼는지 표현하였다. 그러므로 인간의 의무는 자신이 이 세상을 살아가는 한 자기의 책무를 성실히 수행하는 것이라고 그는 생각한다. 그러한 고립과 단절감을 극복하기 위해서 인간은 자연이라는 환경에 순응해야 하는 것이다. 그는 또한 인간은 필연적으로 자연의 지배아래에 있으며 그것을 받아들이고 악의를 품음 자연과 조화를 이루고 그러한 자연에 적응하려고 노력해야 한다는 것을 제시한다. 두 번째로, 인간과 인간 사이의 갈등에서 기인하는 인간의 고뇌에서 프로스트는 인간과 인간 사이에는 의사소통의 차이가 있을 수 있음을 보여준다. 또한 그의 시에서 이해와 의사소통의 단절에 기인한 인간 상호간의 갈등을 다루었다. 이것을 보여주기 위해 그는 자연이라는 배경의 상징을 사용하여 그 속에서 인간의 노동과 인간 사이의 관계를 보여준다. 그리고 그는 상대방의 개성을 이해하고 타협함으로써 그런 갈등의 해결책을 찾을 수 있다고 본다. 인간 갈등의 양상 세 번째로, 프로스트는 일상과 일탈 사이에서 갈등하는 인간의 모습을 보여준다. 그러한 고뇌 극복 방안으로 프로스트는 인간의 도전 정신과 수용의 태도 그리고 노동을 통하여 인간은 자신의 고립이나 단절감을 극복할 수도 있다고 생각한다. 인간의 노동은 자연과의 단절감을 극복하기 위한 시도를 할 때 의미 있는 수단이기도 하다는 것이다. 노동을 통해서 인간은 그 가치를 깨닫고 만족감을 느낄 수 있다. 프로스트의 시에서 초점은 광대하고 다양한 인간 고뇌의 심연을 배회하는 데에 있다. 비록 인간은 어쩔 수 없이 자연의 일부일 수밖에 없지만 인간이 이 세상에서 삶을 계속 유지하려면 위협적인 자연을 적극적으로 극복해나가면서 인간 자신의 정체성을 형성해 나갈 수 있어야한다는 것이 프로스트의 시가 주장하는 바이다. 본 논문의 목적은 프로스트가 인간의 갈등을 극복하기 위한 해결책으로 어떤 노력을 하는지 살펴보는데 있다. 그의 시를 통해서 우리는 프로스트가 어떻게 인간의 내면을 바라보았는지 알 수 있으며 이 세상에서 살아가는 현명한 태도를 배울 수 있다. 그는 인간의 갈등을 삶의 진수로 보고 인간의 문제는 풀어야 할 숙제가 아니라 삶의 실제임을 제시하고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine man's overcoming conflicts in the poetry of Robert Frost. He describes the nature and the people of New England as they really were. He tries to determine the true meaning of man's life and man with nature. He deals with man's relationship with nature. The focus is also concentrated on the conflicts in man's life. In Frost's poetry nature has two aspects: 'Positive' and 'Negative'. Nature sometimes gives man hope and pleasure, but more often, is a destructive force. In other words, Frost never thinks that man can live fantastically or romantically amid the harsh realities of the world. Therefore, the people in Frost's poems are afraid of the threat and indifference of nature. In Frost's poems where nature is cast as an opposing threat, man suffers from the alienation and horror caused by the hostility of the elements and nature's ruthless indifference to human beings. In addition, men experience internal absence in the stark reality of death-in-life. Frost also deals with the themes of solitude, isolation, and alienation caused by a lack of communication and understanding between husband and wife, neighbors or colleagues. He concurrently describes physical labor and interpersonal relationship using symbolic, natural backgrounds. Frost felt that confrontation and conflict always exist in man when ever man comes into existence. Frost thought man could overcome the contradictions of everyday life with the aid of courage and a strong will. In his poems, a farmer finds both appreciation and value while he works, the unity of need and love for labor is well described as an ideal sense of labor. In some of his poems related to labor, Frost emphasizes that man can overcome some aspects of conflicts by taking pleasure in working hard. In Frost's works, the human spirit must continuously enlarge itself and contend with nature. With this challenging spirit, the receptive attitude required to harmonize with human society enables man to overcome the conflicts through the works of his whole life. Thus, he continues to emphasize the importance and value of life portrayed by good example of the true meaning of life.
