테네시 윌리엄스 극에 나타난 자유의지의 양상

Abstract

테네시 윌리엄스(Tennessee Williams 1911~1983)의 작품 속 인물들은 때로는 예민한 비순응자들로서 기존의 지배적인 주류문화의 도덕적 가치와 인습에 반하여 자기 세계를 구축하려하고, 때로는 죽음의 공포에 대항하려고 욕망을 추구하기도 하고, 풍요로움으로 죽음의 불모에 대항하려고 한다. 이들 인물들은 그의 작품 속에 다양한 모습으로 등장하는데, 그들 속에서 공통적으로 나타나는 긍정적 측면은 인물들이 가진 확고한 자유의지이다. 윌리엄스 작품에 있어서 자유의지의 개념은 등장인물이 절망이나 소외에서 벗어나 자신이 원하는 세계를 스스로 구축하려는 의지나 능력을 말한다. 본 논문에서는 그의 주요 극작품에 나타난 자유의지의 양상을 현실인식의 문제와 관련시켜 논의하고자한다. 윌리엄스가 창조한 인물들은 주어진 현실에 순응하기 보다는 자기의 이상을 실현하려는 자유의지의 소유자이며 그것으로 현실을 초월하고자 했다. 그가 창조한 인물들은 자유의지 실현의 토대가 되는 현실을 어떻게 인식하느냐에 따라 자유의지의 양상이 다르게 나타난다. 인물들이 현실세계와 어떻게 상호작용하며 자기 세계를 구축해 나가는지에 관한 문제와, 개별 인물들이 가진 자유의지의 특성과 의미는 본 연구의 주요 과제가 될 것이다. 『유리 동물원』(The Glass Menagerie)의 화자인 탐(Tom)은 자신의 자아실현을 위해 집을 떠난다. 구두회사의 단순 노동자인 탐은 비전 없는 그의 일에서 희망을 찾지 못하고 괴로워한다. 그의 현실인식은 관이나 감옥으로 표현된다. 그는 그곳을 벗어나 자유롭고 예술을 지향하는 다른 세계를 꿈꾼다. 아만다(Amanda)는 과거에 갇힌 채, 자신의 가치관을 고집하며 자식들에게도 고집하고, 로라(Laura)는 현실부적응으로 세상에 나가지 못하고 자신을 유리 동물원 속에 가둔다. 이러한 가족을 뒤로하고 떠난 후 탐은 해설자로 회귀하고 깊은 통찰과 애정으로 가족을 재창조 한다. 그가 극 중 인물이면서 해설자인 것은 예술가로서의 그의 자아실현을 의미한다. 『욕망이라는 이름의 전차』(A Streetcar Named Desire)의 블랑시(Blanche)는 과거의 고통을 극복하지 못하고 그녀의 자유의지는 좌절한다. 남편의 자살로 인한 죄의식과 벨리브(Belle Reve)의 몰락은 그녀를 극한의 고통으로 내몰리게 한다. 이러한 상황에서 그녀가 고통에서 탈출하고자하는 통로는 욕망에의 집착과 알코올의존으로 나타난다. 그녀가 항상 의지해 왔던 ?낯선 사람의 친절?은 빈약한 그녀의 현실인식을 반영한다. 남부의 우아하고 고결한 정신적 문화는 그녀의 자부심이고 그녀가 구축하고자 하는 세계였으나 야만적인 현실세계의 물질주의 앞에서 쉽게 허물어진다. 그녀는 과거의 고통을 극복하기 위한 건강하고 적극적인 삶을 모색을 하지 못한 채 스탠리(Stanley)로 대변되는 현실세계로부터 비참한 파멸을 맞이하게 된다. 『양철 지붕 위의 고양이』(Cat on a Hot Tin Roof)에서 매기(Maggie)는 브릭(Brick)이 부부 관계를 거부함으로서 아이를 낳지 못하고 재산을 상속받지 못하는 위기에 처해 있다. 그녀와 빅대디(Big Daddy)는 현실세계의 인물로서 스탠리처럼 과거에 사로잡힌 인물 브릭을 파괴하는 것이 아니라 끝없는 인내와 사랑으로 브릭을 설득하고 그를 현실세계로 인도한다. 매기가 처한 과거의 가난은 이전 작품의 인물처럼 그녀를 압도하지 않고 오히려 현실타개의 의지로 작용한다. 극의 결말에서 매기가 가족들에게 밝힌 허위 임신사실을 브릭이 암묵적으로 인정함으로써 그녀는 자신이 원하는 세계를 실현하는 것으로 암시한다. 이는 앞의 두 작품과 달리, 그들의 화해는 진정한 사랑과 인내를 통해 자유의지가 실현될 수 있음을 시사하고 있다. 윌리엄스 극의 주인공들은 서로 다른 현실인식과 인내, 극복과 수용을 통한 다양한 자유의지의 양상을 보여준다. 윌리엄스는 등장인물들과 작품을 통해 인간의 삶의 유한함과 죽음을 초월하고자 하는 인간 내면의 자유의지의 욕구를 구현함으로써, 인습, 통념, 억압 속에서도 자신의 자유의지를 펼쳐나가고자 하는 역동적인 삶의 자세를 형상화 하고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the free will of Tennessee Williams'(1911-1983) characters in his major works, in relation to each character?s recognition and understanding of reality. These characters can be divided into three categories: self-realization, frustration, and achievement. However, the classification of the characters inevitably allows for some overlap among the categories. Tom, in The Glass Menagerie, is a young man of literary aspirations caught in a web of grim realities. His eventual departure signifies his search for freedom and self-realization. He recognizes himself as stuck in a coffin. He represents his free will to become an artist and seek adventure. Amanda oppresses and frustrates her son and daughter with her reminiscences of the Blue Mountain, as well as her Puritan values. Laura is a retrogressive female character who is unable to cope with reality due to her lameness and fragility. After Tom leaves home, he returns to reinvent his family with in-depth analysis and warm heart as a narrator. Being a character and narrator himself in the play shows that he achieves his free will as an artist. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche can not overcome her past bitter experiences, and her free will is thus defeated and isolated from others and from society. She is driven to agony by her husband's suicide and Bell Reve's collapse, and then her escapes from reality become the pursuit of physical pleasure and alcohol dependency. Blanche thinks she is responsible for her husband's death and is tormented by her guilty conscience. She thus expresses her feelings through sexual and alcoholic vices. She always depends on the "kindness of strangers," which reflects her limited understanding of reality. Despite her efforts to create her own elegant and spiritual world in the spirit of the Old South, she is destroyed by the power of the real, cruel world, as represented by Stanley. He embodies the industrial and materialistic society of the modern world both physically and mentally. Lastly, in Cat on the Hot Tin Roof, Maggie ? unlike Blanche ? is a realistic and strong woman with bitter memories of her past. Conflict progresses satisfactorily between Maggie, Brick, Big Daddy, and Brick the medium. She has a clear understanding of her reality, deep love for her husband, and strong perseverance. Rather than being overwhelmed by the poverty in her past, she works to overcome her difficulties. Maggie is a character who faces up to the crisis of her marriage and fulfills her wishes to regain her husband's love and inherit Big Daddy's property through aggressive strength and willpower. Her wishes can be realized by Brick's tacit agreement with Maggie's fake pregnancy at the end of the play. In stark contrast to Williams' two previous works, Maggie and Brick' reconciliation implies that free will can be achieved through true love and endurance. This thesis analyzes various aspects of free will in relation to the recognition of reality through Williams? major works, developing points of view on new spiritual values. In the center of Williams' plays lies the problem of human existence and the self. His characters represent the desirable spiritual values of tolerance, endurance, and close relationships. In conclusion, Williams suggests an active attitude is the most important element in life, which aids the subject in the pursuit of free will, despite trying conditions such as a tough social order, prejudices, and repression.
