『미국의 송어낚시』에 나타난 순수 이상주의와 자연 회복의 꿈

Abstract

이 작품은 그 제목이 말해주듯 단지 낚시를 던져 송어를 잡는 서정적 이야기가 아니다. 1960년대 미국 독자들의 열광적인 반응을 이끌어 냈던『미국의 송어낚시』(Trout Fishing in America, 1967)는 반문화의 아이콘으로 인식될 정도로 인기가 높았다. 그런 공감의 원인으로는 이 작품을 통해 브로티건(Richard Brautigan, 1935－1984)이 당 시대의 사회적 문제를 사실적으로 고발하기 때문이다. 사실 이 작품의 내용은 사실과 상상의 경계가 매우 모호하다. 그것은 브로티건의 페르소나인 'I'의 자취를 쫓아가다 보면 작가의 실제적 삶의 궤적과 마주하기 때문이다. 이 작품의 주요 공간적 배경은 샌프란시스코의 워싱턴 스퀘어이다. 그곳에는 프랭클린의 동상이 그의 후세들을 내려다보며 "근검해라. 성실해라. 그러면 물질적 성공ㆍ명예ㆍ권력은 너의 것이다."라고 말하는 듯 우뚝 서 있다. 그러나 이에 대해 표지사진 속 동상 앞에 선 브로티건은 "우리를 보세요. 당신이 말한 미국의 꿈(American Dream)의 약속은 대체 뭐란 말입니까?"라고 말하며 냉소적인 표정을 짓고 있다. 사실 프랭클린 동상 주변에서 'I'는 무료배식을 위해 몰려드는 배고픈 사람들, 예술가임에도 상상력의 나래를 펴기보다는 술에 의존해 생존을 위한 궁여지책을 고민해야 하는 사람들을 본다. 게다가 그의 계부는 카네기의 강철 송어에 완전히 빠져있다. 그걸 소유하지 못한 그는 술로 스스로를 위로하며 산다. 자본주의사회에서 인간은 물질적 풍요와 생활의 편리를 구가한다. 그러나 그 이면에는 권력과 부의 편중으로 소수의 가진 이와 상대적 빈곤에 허덕이는 다수가 있고, 많은 사람들은 정신적 빈곤 상태에 빠져 산다. 이런 빈곤의 치유를 위해 자연에 기대보려 하지만 자연 역시 예전 같지가 않다. 그 이유가 이 작품의 마흔세 번째 이야기인 "클리블랜드 중고품 하치장"(The Cleveland Wrecking Yard)에 적나라하게 펼쳐지고 있다. 이 이야기에서 자본주의의 병폐를 알리는 브로티건의 풍부한 상상력이 아낌없이 펼쳐진다. 무엇이든 돈만 되면 상품화하는 자본주의를 상징하는 클리블랜드 중고품하치장에서는 온갖 자연물마저 일정 단위로 잘려져 겹겹이 쌓여진 채 누군가 사가기를 기다린다. 이것은 인간의 물질적 욕구에 따라 자연마저 지배하려는 인간욕망의 부조리에 대한 고발이다. 47개의 각기 다른 짧은 이야기들로 구성된 『미국의 송어낚시』는 하나의 소재이자 주제인 '미국의 송어낚시'가 관통한다. '미국의 송어낚시'는 변신을 거듭한다. 그리고 변신의 끝은 'I'가 여행을 하며 찾고 있는 '송어하천'과 만나게 된다. 송어하천을 찾아 여행을 떠나는 'I'의 목적은 미국의 순수 이상주의와 자연을 회복하고 싶은 욕구의 여정이다. 영혼의 해방을 희구하며 간직한 종교적 이상주의, 노력의 대가로 누구나 부와 명예를 이룰 수 있다는 성공신화의 꿈, 이상향을 찾아 새로운 여정을 준비할 수 있다는 프런티어의 꿈, 언제나 옆에 있을 것 같은 대자연의 목가적 풍경이야말로 이 소설을 통해 브로티건이 회복시키고 싶은 미국의 꿈의 원형들이다. 그러나 현실세계에서는 이런 꿈의 원형을 찾아볼 수가 없다. 송어낚시가 방황하며 고뇌하는 이유이다. 그래서 브로티건은 리얼리티가 아닌 상상을 통해서라도 그런 꿈을 회복시켜 간직하고 싶어 한다. 요컨대 "창조적 상상력으로 현실 속에서 미국의 꿈을 이루자"라는 것이 이 소설이 전하는 궁극적 메시지라고 하겠다.

Trout Fishing in America (1967) is not just a lyrical pastoral novel as the title reveals itself. It consists of a number of 1960s' counterculture elements. The writer, Richard Brautigan (1935-1984), covered the matters of his time. The novel is composed of forty-seven short stories not closely connected to one another, but "Trout fishing in America" as both the material and the theme penetrates the work. This motif transforms its appearance as a person, place, or thing repeatedly. Consequently the persona meets a trout stream it has sought. The Washington Square of San Francisco is a main spatial background. The Benjamin Franklin statue seemingly beholds his descendants as if saying, "You can have material success, fame, and power if you are thrifty and sincere." In this world of capitalism, more and more people try to enjoy material abundance and convenience. Yet, on the other side, a great number of people struggle in relative poverty and poverty-stricken conditions. Many, therefore, are led to mental poverty. Many turn to nature to soothe their hurt, but nature itself is suffering from selfish exploitation. In "The Cleveland Wrecking Yard", the 43rd story in this novel, Brautigan depicts the vivid images of exploited nature under the capitalist system through his affluent imagination. It appears that anything in nature can be sold as various types of units. The intention of the writer is to accuse the absurdity of human desire to use nature according to a person's materialistic needs. In the novel, "I" keeps traveling in pursuit of recovering American naive idealism and nature. Through Trout Fishing in America, Brautigan wants to restore the following ideal images of American dreams: First, religious idealism harbored through/by aspiring to achieve spiritual liberation. Second, dreams of success that anyone can achieve wealth and fame at the cost of effort. Third, dreams of the frontier which inspire people to keep moving towards new ideal places. Finally, pastoral landscapes of Mother Nature that are taken for granted. However, in reality seeing those images is impossible, which is the reason "Trout fishing in America" is wandering in agony. Consequently, Brautigan wishes to restore those archetypal images in realities of life through creative imaginings. In short, Trout Fishing in America's ultimate message can be said as "Make your American dreams come true through your creative imaginations."
