존 단의 『노래와 소네트』에 나타난 극적요소 분석

Abstract

존 단(John Donne: 1572-1631)은 16세기 말경 페트라르크풍의 연애시에 대한 반발에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 새로운 경지를 개척한 시인이다. 그는 전통의 틀에서 벗어나지 않으면서도 주제를 참신한 방법으로 다루었고, 사실성을 추구하며 진부한 엘리자베스 시대의 연애시를 극적인 기법으로 재생한다. 이 논문은, 단의 시가 극적인 힘을 지니고 있다는 가정을 바탕으로, 『노래와 소네트』의 대표작들에 나타난 극적 요소를 분석함으로써 시의 전체적인 의미구조를 파악하고, 이를 통해 난해한 단의 시 이해에 도움을 주 고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 단은 사랑의 다양한 양상을 충실히 재현하기 위해 인물들이 살아 움직이는 무대의 한 장면을 보는듯한 생생하고 구체적인 상황을 설정한다. 상황 제시에 있어서 단의 시는 감정의 추상적 표현을 넘어서는 구체성을 확보하고 있다. 따라서 화자를 비롯한 인물들의 발언이나 행위는 주어진 상황과 관련지어 파악할 때 비로소 타당성을 갖는다. 『노래와 소네트』의 모든 시는 일인칭 화자의 관점으로 쓰여 있으나 각 작품의 화자가 제각기 다른 인물로 보이게끔 하기 위해 시인과 별개의 존재인 극화된 '나'를 설정하고 있다. 단 시의 극적 효과는 화자의 말을 듣고 있는 청자의 존재로 인해 더욱 강화된 다. 화자와 청자는 드라마에서처럼 구체적인 행동을 함으로써 시를 전개하는 대신, 그들의 언어 행위에서 비롯되는 긴장감이 시의 전개를 이끌어간다. 그리고 그들 간의 관계는 전후 설명이 전혀 없이 곧바로 어떤 상황에서의 감정 토로를 통해 파악된다. 따라서 화자가 말을 시작하는 그 순간은 그 이전까지 지속되어온 그들의 관계를 내포하며, 결말 부분 역시 그 이후 그들의 관계가 어떻게 발전하고 변화할지에 대한 암시를 담고 있다. 단의 시 작업에서의 혁신은 무엇보다도 그 언어사용에 있다고 할 수 있다. 엘리자베스 시대의 소네트나 신화 같은 전원시, 그리고 영웅시 같은 서간문을 쓰는 작가들은 관례적인 감성을 신화 같은 공상과 언어적 기상, 그리고 최면에 빠뜨리는 규칙적인 리듬으 로 장식하였지만, 단은 무대에서 등장인물이 이야기 하듯이 대화체의 언어를 사용한다. 극적 상황을 만들어내기 위해 일반적으로 드라마가 무대 설명과 지문을 필요로 한다면 단의 시는 드라마의 대사에 해당하는 언어만으로 그 효과를 달성하고 있다. 언어에 이어 단 시의 리듬은 겉으로 볼 때는 즉흥적으로 되는대로 만들어진 것처럼 보이나 실은 많은 조심과 의식적인 노력으로 구성되었다. 시 전체의 의미를 확실히 전 달하기 위해 속도를 조절하고, 강세를 주면서 독자들로 하여금 여기서는 휴식하게 하고 저기서는 급하게 몰아댄다. 단의 리듬은 시의 의미에서 나온 것이며 의미의 지배를 받는다. 즉 시어와 이미지를 독특하게 선택하고 의미를 뒷받침하는 리듬을 통하여 특정한 상황에서의 특정한 감정을 강조하는 것이다. 위에서 살펴본 극적 요소들을 통해 단의 시는 일반적인 서정시의 단조로움을 탈피하여 직접성과 동적 진행감 그리고 현실감 등을 고루 느끼게 한다. 이로 인하여 그의 시가 난해함에도 불구하고 현대의 독자들이 관심을 갖게 되는 것으로 추측된다.

John Donne is a poet who reacted against the Petrarchan sonnets at the end of the 16th century and broke new ground in the poetic world. He regenerated old-fashioned Elizabethan Sonnets by using dramatic elements. Assuming that Donne's poems have dramatic power, this thesis aims to analyze dramatic elements of Songs and Sonnets and help in understanding Donne's esoteric poems. Donne's poems setup vivid and concrete situations, like scenes acted out on stage in which characters come to life. A characters' remark or act in poem can be understood correctly when we consider a given situation. Every poem in Songs and Sonnets is written in the first person's view. Donne creates a dramatized 'I', who is separate from the poet, to make the speaker in each poem looks different. This technique is a device that makes Donne's poems dramatic as well as subjective. Dramatic effect in Donne's poems is reinforced by the existence of the listener. The speaker and listener don't show any specific action like in a drama, but instead, a tension originating from their verbal interaction develops the poem. The existence of the second person listener makes the lyric more effective. Above all things, the innovation Donne made in poetry is language use. Elizabethan poets decorated their poems with verbal conceit, fiction, and regular beats to make their poems unique. Donne used language and rhythm of speech. Drama needs a stage direction to set a dramatic situation, but in Donne's poem's language alone fulfills this need. Donne's poems are written with a seemingly impromptu rhythm, but actually the rhythm is written with extreme care and conscious effort. This kind of rhythm is different from the gentle melody of music. He had to find more personal imagery and a more flexible rhythm to express his complex feelings. His rhythm arrests and goads the reader, never fulfilling his or her expectations but forcing him or her to pause here and to rush on there, governing pace and emphasis so as to bring out the full force of the meaning. In conclusion, Donne's poems have dramatic power. we can feel dynamic progress, sense of reality, and a breaking away from the monotony of common lyrics. For those reasons, a lot of modern readers are interested in his poems, despite their abstruseness.
