앨리스 워커의 『컬러 퍼플』에 나타난 흑인 여성의 자아발견과 정체성 문제

Abstract

흑인 여성들은 미국 사회에서 흑인이라는 인종차별뿐만 아니라 여성이라는 이유로 성차별까지 받는 이중의 억압 속에서 살아왔다. 백인들은 남북 전쟁 이후 자신이 가지고 있는 주도권과 우월성을 지키기 위해 흑인들을 차별하고 침묵과 순종을 강요해왔고, 이런 환경 속에서 흑인들은 자신의 주장을 펼치지 못하고 현실에 순응해왔다. 흑인 남성들은 또한 자신들이 받은 차별을 흑인 여성들에게 되풀이하여 남성성과 우월함을 보상받으려 하였다. 문학적인 측면에서도 흑인 여성들의 재능과 노력은 소외되어 왔으나 1970년대 이후로 많은 흑인 페미니스트 비평가들의 등장과 유능한 흑인 여성 작가들이 우수한 작품들을 계속 발표함으로써 흑인 문학의 새로운 지평을 열게 되었다. 앨리스 워커(Alice Walker, 1944-)의 『컬러 퍼플』(The Color Purple)은 백인과 남성 중심주의 사회에서 억압받으며 고통의 삶을 살고 있던 한 흑인 여성 씰리가 그녀 주위에 있던 독립적인 여성들과의 교류를 통하여 자신의 정체성을 찾고, 성숙한 자아를 지닌 여성으로 다시 태어나는 과정을 그린 작품이다. 이 작품은 워커의 세 번째 장편소설로, 미국 흑인 사회의 다양한 사회적, 문화적 측면을 표현하였으며 그녀에게 흑인여성 최초로 퓰리처 상(Pulitzer Prize)과 전미도서상(The American Book Award)의 영예를 안겨 준 작품이기도 하다. 워커는 주인공 씰리(Celie)와 네티(Nettie)가 쓰는 편지의 형식을 통해 당시 흑인 여성들이 처해 있던 비극적이고 억압적인 삶을 표현했다. 이 작품은 미국 내에 있는 흑인들, 그 중에서도 오랜 시간 동안 억압에 시달렸던 흑인 여성들에게 큰 반향을 불러일으켰다. 이 작품을 통하여 철저한 백인 중심의 미국 사회에서 소외되어 온 흑인 여성 문학이 그 위치를 견고히 할 수 있었다. 이 작품 속에서 씰리는 의사소통이 단절된 억압적 상황에서 살아가다 육체의 아름다움 및 신에 대한 생각을 재정립하면서 자신의 정체성을 확립하게 되고, 한 때 굉장한 인기를 누렸던 블루스 가수 슈그(Shug)도 씰리를 도와주는 과정을 통하여 여성이자 어머니로서의 내면에 숨겨져 있던 아픔을 치유하며 정체성을 회복한다. 또한 씰리의 여동생 네티는 아프리카로의 선교를 통하여 흑인이자 신앙인으로서 정체성을 찾게 된다. 워커는 다양한 형태로 민권운동을 실천하고 있는 작가로 흑인 여성의 문제를 흑인 공동체 안의 문제로만 한정시키는 것이 아니라 사회적 약자의 문제로 생각하였고 그들이 진정한 자아를 발견할 수 있도록 하고 있다. 그녀는 『컬러 퍼플』을 통하여 흑인 여성들이 받아왔던 억압과 차별, 갈등에서 벗어나 인격체로서 정체성을 확립할 뿐만 아니라 남성과 여성 사이에 진정한 화해를 이루어 흑인사회의 조화로운 통합을 이뤄내고자 하였다.

Black women had lived in a circumstance of double oppression not only by racial discrimination as African Americans but also sexual discrimination as women in American society. White people have silenced people of color to keep protect leadership and supremacy since the Civil War and many African Americans conformed with this reality without stating their opinion. Black men tried to project the discrimination that they received on to Black women in order to assert their masculinity and superiority. In the case of literature, the talents and efforts of Black women has been alienated, but the appearance of Black feminist critics and the presentation of excellent works of talented Black women writers has made them leaders in the realm of African American Literature. The Color Purple by Alice Walker is a work that describes the life of a black woman named Celie. She had lived with oppression in a male-dominated society, and was reborn into maturity by interacting with the other independent women around her. This work is Walker's third novel and it represents various social and cultural aspects of African American society. Also, she attained glory by receiving the Pulitzer Prize and The American Book Award. Walker explains the tragic and oppressive lives of Black women in that time in history via an exchange of letters between protagonists Celie and Nettie. The novel was a sensation in the Black community, especially among Black women who had suffered from oppression for a long time. Through this work, African American women's literature strengthened its position one that had until then been isolated by Eurocentric American society. In this novel, Celie establishes her identity by redefining beauty and her concept of God. After living in oppressive circumstances, Celie meets a Blues singer named Shug, who recovers Celie's identity by treating her hidden pain as a woman and a mother. Also, Celie's younger sister Nettie discovers her identity as a Black woman and a Christian through missionary in Africa. Walker is a writer who is involved in the civil rights movement in various ways and she tries to help Black women find their identities by redefining the problem of Black women as one not limited the problems inside the Black community but as inclusive of the problems of disadvantaged groups. She not only established these identities by overcoming discrimination and abuse that the had received, but also tried to create unity in the Black community by encouraging reconciliation between men and women of color.
