Causes and Aspects of Willy Loman's Alienation in Death of a Salesman
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the causes and aspects of Willy Loman's alienation in Death of a Salesman. Arthur Miller's masterpiece, Death of a Salesman, is based on the assumption that the main character Willy Loman, represented by a common man, has an anachronistic sense of value in a capitalist society where materialism is prevalent. And the process of life 's destruction after pursuing his own American Dream. The American dream that he dreams of is successful as a salesman, enjoying material abundance, but he is longing for idyllic life. Between these two contradictory dreams, he wanders, feels alienated and frustrated among the surrounding characters and society, which can be attributed to his personality flaws. Willy shows a coercive aspect of unilaterally imposing his thoughts and arguments on others, and he feels alienated from sharing genuine communication with his closest family members. And Willy's self-formation embraces the different values of father, brother Ben, and David Singleman without filtering then Willy forms an uneasy self that does not belong anywhere else. Willy 's self - centered personality and uneasy self - formation make him feel alienated from his family and society. First of all, the children who are raised by his wrong values in relation to the family, especially the eldest son, Biff is wandering for over thirty without a certain job, and the younger son Happy grows up as an adult with a strong female bias. And as Linda repeatedly says that she would not understand Willy's death, we can see that he does not really communicate with her. In terms of social isolation, Willy is not really communicating with his only friend, Charley, and is in a fantasy during their conversation. Willy also feels alienated from the fact that Charley 's son, Bernard, has grown up as a good lawyer and has failed in his childhood education as well as watching the biff against him. In his relationship with Howard, who is portrayed as a capitalist society, Willy is assessed as incompetent and fired. He also lives in a tight-lipped apartment, but is still romantic and idyllic in his longing for the country. However, Willy recognizes internally that he wants to live in a place where he lives in the first place, so he is constantly dissatisfied with his surroundings and is completely alienated from society. In conclusion, it can be seen that it is important for a person to achieve success through Death of a Salesman to have a sound value to grasp reality and to live on the basis of his right aptitude and talent. In addition, individuals must realize that they are inevitable and organic relationships in their homes and society, and have morality to understand and take responsibility for each other. Also, when they are understood and accepted each other in family relations, a healthy self is formed and at the same time a happy life can be obtained. Therefore, in order to escape the alienation of human relationships, we must recognize that we need an eye to see exactly what we are in, and a right value to lead our life.
