The Recovery of Self through Rememory in Beloved
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the lives of the characters appearing in Toni Morrison's Beloved, the process of facing the past through rememory and their recovery of self. The opening of the novel is set in 1873, not long after the liberation of slaves, but the main characters are living in mental isolation, unable to manage their own lives. In the course of looking back upon the isolated lives of the main characters, Morrison delves into the nature of slavery and its continued effects on those who suffered under it, as it influences their sense of self and their future paths.
The main characters of this novel, Sethe and Paul D are deprived of their mental freedom due to the mental traumas they suffered under the system of slavery. Although she did not experience slavery directly, Denver also experiences mental disturbance, having grown up in an abnormal environment, alienated from the society. The pitiful situation of Sethe and Paul D encapsulates the shape and condition of all black people who experienced slavery. It exposes the shame of the slave system, unchecked and camouflaged for so long in the 'country of dreams'.
The point emphasized by Morrison is that the past governs our daily lives, never to be forgotten even if it is untold. It is dangerous to dream of the future without settling our experiences of the past, the memories of which continue to disturb our present lives. A true recovery of self can be achieved only when the scars inflicted in our past are expressed through our own voice and shared with other people. The being of the Beloved, which emerged in embodied shape, is an epic device used to accelerate the rememory. Sethe and Paul D came to discover the hidden facts of their pasts through storytelling, as their fragmented and scattered memories are integrated and reconstituted into oneness.
In addition, the memories ignited by the appearance of Beloved enables the main characters to recognize and approach their painful past in a fresh way. By coming to recognize themselves gradually, via rememory, they are able to gain a foothold on the present and let go of the past in the right way. But Sethe concentrates on the relationship with Beloved more and more as time elapses and sinks into the past again. The daughter of hope, Denver, asks for assistance from the community by running out. Sethe shows the possibility of self-recovery as a true entity by sensing her own value out of the bondage of the past, owing to the assistance from the neighbors.
In conclusion, this novel offers an insight into a black female writer who would like to acquire psychological freedom by means of rememory. Through talking and sharing, one can draw out the hidden scars that linger internally in all black people due to the harmful effects of slavery. This is the theme of this text, and it is a basic right for African Americans seeking to recover their depressed egos and wanting to live as righteous constituent members of American society. Beloved conveys with great power and meaning the special experiences black people suffered under the system of slavery, but extends and connects this central theme to the universal issue of searching for human identity.
