『순수와 경험의 노래』에 나타난 William Blake의 사회비평 연구

Abstract

윌리엄 블레이크(William Blake, 1757-1827)는 18세기 후반과 19세기 전반에 걸쳐 뛰어난 상상력과 깊은 통찰력으로 사회를 비판한 낭만주의 시인이다. 그 당시 영국사회는 산업혁명과 프랑스 혁명의 영향에 의해 산업은 물론이거니와 사람들의 생활 전반에까지 큰 영향을 받게된다. 기술은 좋아졌지만, 산업화로 인해 물질주의가 팽배해지고 권력층의 횡포와 노동력 착취가 심한 시기였다. 이 시기에 블레이크는 그 누구보다 당대의 사회와 현실의 문제를 심각하게 고찰하고 진지하게 문학 속에 담아낸다. 그는 신에 대한 문제, 정치·사회의 문제, 가부장적 제도의 문제에 사회비평의 초점을 맞춘다. 이것을 위해 블레이크에게 상상력은 매우 중요한 개념이었으며, 그는 독자들도 스스로 상상력을 발휘하여 그의 작품세계에 참여하길 바란다. 블레이크는 여러 작품 중에서 1789년 31편의 시가 담긴 『순수의 노래』(Songs of Innocence)를 먼저 내놓았다. 이후 1794년, 32편의 시를 더해 합본으로 『순수와 경험의 노래』(Songs of Innocence and Experience)를 출간한다. 『순수의 노래』는 아이들처럼 밝고 맑은 열린 세계를 나타낸다. 시인은 이 시집에서 세상을 노래하는 화자인 '파이퍼'의 모습으로 표현되며 작품들을 통해 사회를 간접적으로 비평한다. 대조적으로 『경험의 노래』에서는 '바드'를 통해 표현되며 작품 속에서 직접적으로 사회를 비평한다. 경험의 세계에는 타락한 세상 속에서 고통 받는 인간들의 모습이 나타난다. 블레이크는 『순수와 경험의 노래』에서 사회개선을 추구하는 역사적 소명감을 지닌 시인의 전형적인 양식을 통하여 온갖 형태의 억압적 상황 속에서도 인간의 창조력과 발전적인 삶에 대한 무한한 가능성을 인식시켜 준다. 동시에 우리가 지향해야 할 공동체적 삶의 가능성을 열어 준다. 바로 이러한 점들이 우리로 하여금 블레이크가 탁월한 의미에 서의 사회비평의식을 소유했던 정치·사회적 시인임을 부인할 수 없게 한다. 상상력을 통해 인간이 타인의 삶에 관심을 가지고 타인의 아픔에 함께 슬퍼하며 공감하게 될 때, 블레이크가 꿈꾸는 이상 사회를 향해 첫 발걸음을 내디딜 수 있을 것이다.

William Blake (1757-1827) is a romantic poet who criticized society for his imagination and deep insight throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At that time, the British society was influenced by the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution, which had a profound impact on the industry as well as on people's lives in general. Technology has improved, but materialism has become widespread due to industrialization, and the tyranny of the power struggle and the exploitation of the labor power have been in a severe period. At this time Blake takes seriously the problem of society and reality of his time and seriously puts it in literature. He focuses on social criticism on issues of God, problems of politics and society, and problems of patriarchal institutions. Imagination was a very important concept for Blake, and he hopes that readers will also be able to use their imagination to participate in his work. Blake first published the Songs of Innocence, a collection of 31 poems in 1789. In 1794, he published Songs of Innocence and Experience with 32 poems. Songs of Innocence represents a bright and clear open world like children. Poets are expressed in the form of 'Piper', a speaker who sings the world in this poem, and indirectly criticize society through his works. In contrast, in Song of Experience, 'Bard' expresses and criticizes society directly in the work. The world of experience reveals the suffering of humans in a fallen world. Blake recognizes the infinite possibilities of human creativity and developmental life in all forms of oppressive situations through the typical style of a poet with a historical call for seeking social improvement in the Songs of Innocence and Experience. At the same time, it opens up the possibility of a community life that we should aim for. These points make it impossible for us to deny that Blake is a political and social poet who possesses social critical awareness in a prominent sense. When human beings are interested in the lives of others and feel grieved and sympathetic to the pain of others through imagination, Blake will be able to make his first step towards ideal society.
