Abstract
For a communist by Oh Sung-chan is a novel-collection created basedon the factual narrative listed in Halla's loud weeping sound(한라의 통곡소리). This study reviewed how the historical truth and transmission revealedas 4.3novel based on the genre understanding as testimony novel by focusingon For a communist is a series novel with mutual text characteristic.First, Halla's loud weeping sound a record literature, which is the baseof For a communist was reviewed. Halla's loud weeping sound waspublished since June-Democracy Movement in 1987, it shows the reason whyto discover the truth of 4·3 and the fact that 4·3 is the ongoing problem. Halla's loud weeping sound is a record literature which consists of 46testimonies, it tried to suggest the damage aspect of 4·3 and recordedfocusing on the tragic events during 4·3.Next, 5 mid-length novels of For a communist showed the narrativestructure of 'taste-coverage(or recall)-awakening'. This narrative structurereveals the subject of novel effectively, and is the method which can deliverthe testimony effectively. 5 mid-length novels accommodating the factualnarrative strengthen the fact and the subjectivity of event by not revealingthe interpretation or the judgment of narrator in the testimony throughvariable focus narration from the perspective of other people or indirectcontent, direct speech, imitative indirect speech. This narrative strategy allowsthe characters in this novel to maintain the plurality of consciousness whilemaking their versatility strong, increasing the verisimilitude of each novel, and effectively delivering testimony. The testimonies of Halla's loud weeping sound are accepted as eithercentral or supplementary factual narratives in relation to the subject. In theformer case, it is treated as a matter of national violence that is still ongoingthrough the problems of the Lynch case and the guilt by association system. In addition, in the latter case, there are many contents that show thebrutality of the punitive force, showing the composition of the memorystruggle against official memory.Furthermore, in the 5 mid-length novels of For a communist, Eachprotagonist from a first-person or third-person perspective is internallyfocused, so the distance between the narrator and the author is close. Thisnovel collection can be characterized by all the protagonists showing theperspective and the vision of author regardless of time. The protagonists withthis characteristics in this novel collection are moderate figure and anintellectual. In addition, the protagonists are set as characters with a senseof author's responsibility. Also, protagonists show the moral of intellectualswho try to move toward a good life in the rightful society. In 5 mid-lengthnovels, 'the present(the end of the 1980s)' of novel has the background ofJune-Democracy Movement in 1987. As 4·3 and the present are combined, itshows the reality that the national violence committed in 4·3 is repeated upto now. 4·3 and the current novel can be said to serve as mirror text thatreflects each other. Therefore, 'the present(the end of the 1980s)' is therepeated history of 4·3, and is the time showing the pain of 4·3 doesn't end.The protagonists of each novel seek compromise or overcoming throughforgiveness or reflection. The possibility of these forgiveness or reflection areall expressed into Jeju's nature. Jeju's nature is the important literaryfoundation to Oh Sung-chan who has lived as a resident in Jeju. OhSung-chan's locality shows the power of local that resists against thesuppressed reality due to the violence of central government through Jeju'snature.Like this, For a communist is a series novel sharing the multi-layermutual text characteristics, forming the resistant discussion. The significanceof this novel is as follow. First, this novel collection is 4·3 novel thatreminds the memory contained in the record literature. Second, this novelcollection binds the novel as a series under the sub title of 'rewriting Sagi(史記)' in order to criticize the national violence issue and uses thecharacteristics properly. Third, this novel collection discovers the possibilitythat can heal the tragedy of 4·3 from the reflection of intellectual and theforgiveness of victim.For a communist by Oh Sung-chan shows why the attitude of listeningto the voice of witness in order to shed light on hidden historical events isimportant. In addition, this novel collection is a good example showing 4·3novel written based on the memories can be an appropriate method for theformation of resistant discussion.
