A Study on Foreign Direct Investment Strategies of Chinese E-Commerce Companies in accordance with the 'One Belt and One Road' Policy : Focusing on the case of Alibaba
Abstract
As China's economic development has entered a stage of rapid development, the supply-side structural reforms have been deepened, the "going out" strategy has achieved remarkable results, and international production capacity cooperation has been continuously strengthened. Based on an in-depth analysis of China's domestic and international situations, China formally proposed the "One Belt One Road" policy in 2013, namely the "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" initiative, aiming to borrow from ancient China. The important position of the land and sea Silk Road in the economic, political and cultural exchanges between the East and the West has given it new connotations in the new historical period.
Chinese companies have had a history of overseas direct investment activities for some time, but under the "One Belt One Road" policy, investment in countries along the route is still in its infancy. This article uses case study method and literature study method to focus on the different modes of foreign direct investment of Chinese enterprises in the "Belt and Road" countries. First, it briefly introduces the five major contents of the "Belt and Road" initiative: policy communication, facility connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds. It provides an overview of the foreign direct investment model and its selection theory, analyzes the overall situation of Chinese companies' investment in countries along the route and summarizes The investment situation of each investment model, main investment host countries, key investment areas and specific investment projects are reviewed. At the same time, through reading a large number of cases, this article divides the main modes of Chinese companies investing in the "Belt and Road" countries into four types: government-social capital cooperation (PPP), establishment of Sino-foreign joint ventures, cross-border M&A and investment, and establishment of overseas economic and trade cooperation parks. Study the connotation, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of different models, as well as the main reasons why Chinese companies choose various models and the main problems and risks they face, and collate the investment data of Chinese companies under various models. At the same time, it elaborated on the case of Alibaba Group as the center, and at the end of the article combed the content of the full text, extracted relevant experience and lessons, and concluded that Chinese companies have different options for overseas direct investment in the "Belt and Road" countries Feasibility recommendations at different levels. Feasible suggestions are put forward for different governments and enterprises. 1. In-depth analysis of various institutional arrangements and policy environments of the host country. 2. Cooperation among the government, enterprises, and financial institutions. 3. Strengthen the training of international talents for foreign direct investment. 4. Exploit emerging markets and actively respond to the One Belt One Road policy. 5. Organizational structure optimization. 6. Create a good investment image of the company.
The choice of a company's foreign direct investment model is a very complicated process. It must have a clear understanding of the current investment situation, be able to accurately position its own development status and business objectives, and fully grasp the host country's economy, politics, and culture. It is necessary to be good at summing up and learning from the experience and lessons of historical investment projects and having excellent international investment talents to create a successful foreign direct investment activity. Therefore, with the increase of China's investment in "One Belt One Road" projects, Chinese enterprises need to deal with the above-mentioned problems in continuous practice, choose a suitable investment model, and embark on an overseas investment path that suits them.
