Abstract

This study set out to discuss the life stories of women on the Jeju Island that hadto live in gender imbalance prevalent around the island after a huge number of mendied in April 3 Uprising of Jeju. The deformed gender imbalance causedcomprehensive changes to the Homi Village. As the lives of "Holemeongs," who losttheir husbands in the uprising and formed a majority of women in the village, wereput in the spotlight, they had been cited as representative cases of women and theirexperiences in the wake of the uprising. Once the category of "Holemeongs" wascreated according to the criterion of "presence and absence of husband," the lives ofwomen outside the category became invisible. In addition, "Holeomeong," which is atitle of variability, was homogenized into a single experience.In the Homi Village, women had to suffer many different ordeals and pain in theextreme gender imbalance phenomenon. Some forms of pain received a spotlight asthey were revealed abruptly after the April 3 Uprising of Jeju, whereas others wereconsidered to be constant in family relationships and were not exposed. Womensuffered agony in the village in the entangled marriage relations brought by thegender imbalance phenomenon.Their lives, however, did not end in hardship and ordeals. The women of HomiVillage made use of networks of various kinds and types within the village toovercome their hardship. They had various networks including the relative networkeven though they became invisible due to the concept of nuclear family and wereable to survive after the uprising by creating, managing and mobilizing networks ofvarious kinds and types.
