문화 교육에 대한 영어 교사와 학습자의 인식 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 우리나라 영어 교사와 중․고등학교 학습자의 문화에 대한 전반적인 인식과 그 두 집단 간 문화 교육에 관한 인식의 차이를 검토한 후, 효과적인 영미 문화 교육을 위한 방안을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 다음과 같은 연구 문제를 설정하였다.

첫째, 영미 문화 교육에 대한 중·고등학교 영어 교사와 학습자의 인식은 어떠한가? 둘째, 영미 문화 교육에 대한 중·고등학교 영어 교사와 학습자 인식의 공통점과 차이점은 무엇인가? 셋째, 효과적인 중·고등학교 영미 문화 교육을 위한 개선점은 무엇인가?

연구 수행을 위하여 제주도에 근무 중인 영어 교사 101명과 중·고등학생 279명을 대상으로 설문지와 인터뷰를 통하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 18.0 프로그램을 사용하여 빈도분석과 독립표본 t-검정을 실시하였고, 다음과 같은 주요 결과를 얻었다. 연구 결과, 문화와 문화 교육에 대한 교사와 학습자의 인식은 대부분 긍정적인 응답의 비율이 높게 나타났다. 문화 교육 자료와 매체에 있어서는 두 집단 간 수업에서 실제 활용되는 매체에 대한 인식의 불일치가 존재했다. 문화 교육 내용의 초점에 대해서는 특히 교사 집단에서 'little c'에 해당하는 문화 내용을 소재로 하여 교육하는 비중이 더 높은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 현행 영어 교과서에 대해서 교사들은 실제 수업에서 사용되는 교과서, 참고서 및 교사용 지도서에 대해 상대적으로 만족하지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타난 반면 학생들은 교사보다 평균적으로 높은 수치를 보이며 교과서의 내용과 양에 대한 만족을 보이고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 자료와 매체 개발, 양질의 교사 연수를 통한 교사 전문성 신장, 교사의 인식 개선을 위한 노력을 통하여 효과적으로 영미 문화 교육을 할 수 있음을 시사하고 있다.

This study aims to investigate the overall perceptions of secondary English teachers and learners on teaching and learning cultures, find out the similarities and differences in cultural education between the teacher and learner group, and to suggest effective ways to teach English culture in classes. The research questions are as follows. First, what is the perception of secondary English teachers and learners about English culture education? Second, what are the similarities and differences between secondary English teachers and learners' perceptions of English culture education? Third, what are the improvements for effective cultural education in secondary schools? To address the research questions, the data from 101 English teachers teaching in Jeju Island and 279 middle and high school students were collected through questionnaires and interviews. Based on the collected data, descriptive statistical analysis, frequency analysis, and independent sample t-test were conducted using the SPSS 18.0 program. The major results of the analysis are as follows. It was found that teachers and learners' perceptions of culture and culture education were mostly high in the proportion of positive response. Regarding cultural educational materials and media, there was a mismatch in perception of the medium actually used in classes between two groups. As for the contents of culture education, teachers' groups were found to be more likely to educate students based on cultural contents about so-called 'little c'. With regard to current English textbooks, teachers were found to be relatively not satisfied with textbooks, reference books and instructional books available in actual classes. In contrast, students were found to be showing satisfaction with the content and quantity about culture of the textbook, indicating an average of higher figures than teachers. The results of this study suggest that English cultural education be effectively provided through efforts to develop data and media, enhance teachers expertise through quality teacher training, and improve teacher awareness.
